Sin culpa

Gail Carriger

While I always enjoy Alexia Tarabotti, Lord Maccon, Professor Lyall, and the rest of Gail Carriger's fantastic characters, there were parts of this story that lagged for me. As in both previous novels, Alexia is constantly pursued by those who wish her harm. There is daring, excitement, intrigue, vampires, werewolves and mysteries...but I feel like much of the intrigue is cleared up too soon. I feel like there were a few too many pages between revelation and the wrap-up of the inevitable.

That said, I suspect that some of what I found lagging may have to do with where this installment fits into the overarching story arc of Carriger's delightfully-created world. Carriger hands us so many little plot-twists involving Lord Akeldama, the Shadow Council, drones and clavigers alike. She also throws us a few new characters that will hopefully make future appearances, as well as some choice scenes with Mrs.Ivy Hisslepenny Tunstell.

Skim when you must, just keep going. Though not my favorite of the series, I do still recommend it, and cannot wait to move on to book 4 (and read book 5 when it's released in March!).

She forgave him way too easily, tbh.

Like the first two books of the Parasol Protectorate series, I enjoyed Blameless immensely. Like the second book, Changeless, the third book was much more like a series novel in nature, taking the cliffhanger of the second book and running with it. The main mystery of Blameless is a very personal one for our fearless heroine. Readers will definitely need a handy pot of tea for fortitude. At this point, you definitely need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one!

I must say I wasn't sure that I would like this series when I saw it but decided to give it a try anyways. I actually ended up liking it very much. The characters are fantastic, and the story lines have been very entertaining so far.

3.5 stars

The description gives a good plot summary (don't read it if you prefer to be surprised) so I'll concentrate on the delightful details that make me chuckle all the way through: a horrible set of apartments "with only one parlor", mechanical ladybugs which attack, the practicalities of dirigible travel while wearing a long skirt and bustle, culinary surprises and incredible insults. All with the best manners, of course.

SpoilerOh, and the growing realization that Alexia's father had a lot to answer for.

The book is witty and decently written, like the first two, but the pregnancy trope and full on rejection by her husband was not really handled very well. Lots of plot threads left hanging to be resolved in a next book.

<\spoiler> if I were her, I’d have run off with the female scientist and never talked to the bastards husband or worked for the queen again. The husband showed his true worth and you wouldn’t have caught me dead returning to him.
