Intriguing concept. I originally picked up this book to use in the bibliography of a university assignment, but I completely forgot about it. Then I came across the film online and wanted to know what all the fuss was about, so I retrieved the book and found out. I loved the two main characters, Bastian and Atreyu, simply because they were both unique and flawed. Their stories kept me on the edge of my seat, anticipating what was going to happen, wondering where the story would turn next, if they would survive until the end. Secondary characters, the wide range that existed anyway, were almost as brilliant to engage with. They stood on their own as creations of the author, but they also doubled as metaphors for Bastian's journey of self-discovery. And THAT metaphor was awe-inspiring all by itself. To have put such intricate detail and extensive thought into every aspect of this book makes the author very talented and very dedicated. I would definitely recommend this to most people, despite its bizarre concept. There's something...magical about it.

a very lovable classic. however, i found myself getting annoyed at the way things were going during the second half of the book. it took me some time to get through. the world building is amazing though!

This is a fine young adult book. It resonates with my inner child, as Bastian gets to do things that I many times wished I could do: escape school to read, and get sucked into a book I was reading. It possesses that childlike sense of right and wrong, and a surety of the universe and how it is constructed.

As an adult, it falters in places, but the message at the end rings true to me now in my thirties, and I look at people who have no imagination and no sense of self or family.

The translation left a few odd turns of phrase, but did the story justice as far as I know. I do not know German, so I am at the mercy of the translator here.

Lastly, as a fan of the movie adaptation, the book is, in fact, better - and the movie is very well done.

This was a cute little book. It had some really good messages in it. It was so creative the way it is written in two different colors and that it talks about the book inside the book.
