I rate it a 4.8 actually. The love I have for this book??!!!😭❤️🫶🏽
Wow! This book was actually good. It made me cry, it made me angry, it made me pause and think about my life and it left my jaw wide opened. The first book that made tear drops fall. The way my mouth flew open when I realized the person speaking in the first person was Vainne and not Isabella??? Isabella died in the arm of Gaetan when the reunited??? Sophie died???? She never told Julian who his father was??? I’m left with many complex questions and feelings. Overall, it was a very good book. Very different from what I normally read, but it’s a start to a new adventure. By the way, this book put a lot of new information I never knew or would have imagined about World War Two.
Also, as I began reading the book, I made predictions on how I thought the book would go and I was so sure. Well, let’s just say none of them were accurate😭😂🤚🏼.

there are jumps in time now and then (written in first person while rest of book is 3rd), and those chapters, while very brief, ruined the pacing for me. And there are elements of Vianne's story that are things that I, personally, do not like reading. Also, a lot of rather cliche word choice and very stiff dialogue.

A rounded-up 4 stars, probably 3.5. I don't read a ton of historical fiction so may not be a great judge but I enjoyed reading it! KH always finds a way to suck me into a storyline. I liked the multi-POV storyline switching between the two sisters in the 40s as their lives connected and diverged, but the 1995 storyline kind of flopped (thankfully it was a small portion of the book).

Two sisters navigate war torn Europe, both contributing to the war effort, one more quietly than the other. Historical fiction at its best. I don’t want to give much away, if you are looking in to breaking into historical fiction- reading this is how you will fall in love with the genre.
