In one night, Laia has lost everyone that she loves. The empire suspected her older brother of working with the resistance and has sent “the mask” to take care of him. Laia’s grandparents are murdered and her brother is taken prisoner. Laia narrowly escapes and knows that the only way to save her brother is to find the resistance.
Elias is struggling with his identity and conscience. The son of the ruthless commandant, he knows that he will be forced to commit mass destruction. Knowing that is not the life for him, he plans to flee. When the augers catch wind however, he knows that he must stay in Blackcliff to protect the ones that he loves.
After finding the resistance, Laia is sent into Blackliff as a spy and will serve as a slave under the commandant. The treatment is harsh but Laia is determined to get information back to the resistance to save her brother!
There is a little love triangle in this first installment that adds some intrigue in the midst of violence. Proceed with caution with this title, there are quite a few trigger warnings. All-in-all, I will be picking up book two eventually!

Despite all the YA tropes (two love triangles (or a love square?), instalove, everyone having the hots for both main characters because they're incredibly beautiful, star-crossed lovers...) this was actually quite enjoyable. I do wish it didn't follow certain gender stereotypes though (women falling in love while men simply experience lust, women not being able to think clearly because of emotions while men keep their cool...). All in all fast-paced and enjoyable but probably not one I will reread.

I rated this book four out of five stars because it is incredibly detailed with great characters, descriptions, and comparisons. The characters are three dimensional, they make mistakes and bad decisions like any real person would, and both Elias and Laia have smart character development. The author uses great word choice, using metaphors that are descriptive while still displaying the characters views, and every chapter made me want to read more. I recommend this book to anyone who has not read it yet because it is amazing. Nothing in this book is black and white, and that is why I liked it so much.
This book was actually pretty good. It has hardly any romance which is something I’m usually not a fan of but I got around it because there was like a love square hunted at which was very different for me. In the beginning this book was a little slow and the world building is kind of confusing when it comes to the different classes but it doesn’t really matter as long as you get the understanding that Laia is a slave and Elias is a new Mask graduate (basically a soldier/assassin). There are parts in this book that I really just wanted to throw it across the room because I was just so pissed. I did like watching Laia character grow in confidence in herself and become brave like her mother was. I also enjoyed reading Elias‘s mental turmoil and also resolving some of it by the end of the book. Helene was a very complex character and I’m curious to see how she develops in the next book and if we possibly get a book with her perspective in it because she is something else. There are moments where I hate Helene and there are moments where I love Helene. She’s very complicated. Keenan is a very mysterious character and I can’t wait to see how his character evolves in the next book and how his relationship grows with Laia and how it is complicated with Elias in the picture now.
Also this book I didn’t tab a lot for it I only have three quote tabs, two romantic tabs, and one tab of a scene I enjoyed. If you liked the action and the storyline of Throne of Glass with the sprinkle of the romance but it’s not a heavy plot point I think you would like this book.
