To be honest, I wanted to love this book but couldn’t. I’d been highly recommended it by many friends and the first half was so hauntingly beautiful but the more I read the more harmful I felt the book was. The graphic scenes of violence and trauma with no true trigger warning, the complete lack of understanding for how social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists function and what delineation of work looks like, and the callousness and naïveté that suicidal ideation self harm and mandated reporting are approached with destroyed any respect I'd built for this author. How do you write a book about horrific trauma and only consult experts on superficial careers of the characters rather than literally anyone with a true understanding of what trauma does to a person and how it is approached in therapy? It’s clear no mental health professionals were consulted for the book and honestly I think it’s incredibly harmful especially to someone who has potentially experienced any of the 5000 trigger warnings this book should have stamped on the cover.

Yes, it is good as everybody says. I don’t usually read hyped books, but glad i read this one. Dark, poignant, and at times disturbing, but also, reaffirms the power of relationships and friendships.
i honestly have no words other than this is the most devastating, heartbreaking, beautiful book I’ve ever read. truly believe this book will make me see others and the world differently. not for the faint of heart but definitely worth the read if you’re up for it. I will be thinking about the characters of this book for long after reading as if they are long lost friends
