This was different from the first two books but very good. It continues to build on the previous books both in terms of world-building/setting and characters. I enjoyed this with one small caveat -- this author has a tendency to make the reader really work for the HFN ending -- it is a long book that at times felt long. Plot progression involves the reading being wrung through a whole lot of drama and tension -- that went on a bit -- but did not slow down the story or was overly unpleasant. I continue to really enjoy the setting -- Green Creek feels vibrant and alive to me -- the prose is exceptional in this regard -- as are the wolves -- who feel very real to me. There is not a whole lot of romance in this book but I found I did not miss it -- there was enough chemistry there and the relationship that blossomed was lovely and hard-won. And this book gets bonus points for ace representation which this author has a history of doing well -- and this book is no exception.

Still, there are a few things that did not make sense ... and that may be resolved in the third book in this series due out next year. Ezra's fascination with Robbie ... I was not sure if we were meant to think it was part of the madness or something else? I kept waiting for the "something else". I have a whole bunch questions regarding the timber-wolf feral -- who becomes a pretty central character by the end of the book. How is he feral? And his parentage doesn't include wolves and so why is he a wolf -- and once associated with hunters and witches? This really needs to be resolved well in the next book for this series to make sense ... otherwise, it is an odd part of the story that I don't understand.

Otherwise, I will read the next book. There was a time when the series felt tedious and I thought I would abandon this series (and I have had a history of dnf's with this particular author) ... but I will read the next book and I'm looking forward to it.
