Wow

Beautiful and emotional. Well written. As an ICU nurse, I felt so much of what was written here. Thank you.

Definitely one of the better "what it's like to be a doctor" books I've read.

Tear jerker

Read on a sunny day with Kleenex close by. This book reminds us that pain and sadness and death are all the great equalizers but it also reminds us to love and cherish what we have.

I found the writing pleasant but extremely unrealistic, patronizing and idealizing. The essance was padded with pretty words and as a healthcare worker myself, it felt ingenuine.

I really needed to read a book about medicine again to get me motivated for exams. This one wasn't bad but didn't knock me out of my socks either. The book is divided into short stories, some I liked a lot, some less. Whenever the author imagined the life of his patients it got a bit to whimsical for me. Apart from that I really liked his reflections on life and death in the medical field though and was very interested in his experiences as an ER doctor.

I am on a mission, you see I have spent the past two years loosing almost all faith in doctors. I have stumbled upon a lot who are clearly not in the field for the right reasons. Now I am blessed with a few good doctors but thanks to those who have left me with what can only be called medical trauma, I find myself waiting for the "shoe to drop" with my good doctors. So why would I read this book, because I am trying to see if there are any good doctors left, and simultaneously figure out what turns doctors cold and un-compassionate. Having been a patient in the ER many times and in a few trauma rooms, this book seemed like a start into the emergency medicine portion of the medical field.
It confirmed my thoughts that some ER doctors have seen so much they have to turn cold, they are overworked and understaffed. This problem is nationwide.
This was a great read, the author is at times a little too descriptive but for the readers who have not been in the hospital or worked in care giving it helps. Dr. Green does show the burn out end of ER medicine. Although I have only had a few rough encounters with a few ER doctors whom I did not get along with this book will hopefully remind me that they may have had to tell a loved one someone has died just before seeing you. This book does have a lot of death, but that is what trauma rooms are mostly for, those who are clinging on for dear life and need more interventions. Good read, nice short stories, the last one will melt your heart.
I will continue to read books like this and others by this author to help my point of view on doctors and hopefully help me learn that not all have lost their passion and compassion.

Amazing read. Definitely worth the read.

I’m not sure where to begin. I stumbled upon this book by chance while skimming amazon and decided to give it a chance. I’ve spent the last two hours with my head buried in my phone just to finish it because I didn’t want to put it down. From a young age I have dealt with the ins and outs of trauma. I spent more time in hospitals with my terminally ill grandparents than we did at our home. This book gives a look from the other side. You get to see it through the eyes of a ER trauma doctor. While it does go into some cases this is more about the mindset of Dr. Green and it is truly fascinating. Being part of the medical field I have some experience but I never worked in trauma; I was long term care. This book is so well written and insightful that I can’t wait to go get the other book he had written.
