I LOVED this story. Shakespear obviously deviates from Plutarchs writings - but that's how historical fiction goes. I especially love Cleopatra. What a fierce woman. And I couldn't bring myself to like Antony. Not after reading Plutarch's Histories. This play has a lot of scene changes - A. LOT. It's easy to imagin how it would be played out on a stage or in a movie.
Lots of vivid and interesting characters. The death scene,.. scenes,.. act was moving, awesome (in the old sense), but also kind of bizarre. At first I didn't pick up on some of the humor of it, but reading it as both humorous and sad works well. Great histrionic speeches, of course. I realize the Ptolemaic themes in the metaphors are doing important work but there were a few times when it felt a bit distracting.
Certainly worth reading and rereading. I don't know why this wasn't more of a staple of my education. Maybe just Fortune's fault.

Cleopatra bugged me so much in this play. She is whiney and bossy and manipulative. Not a very strong female character. I was almost glad when she died. Although it did keep me reading.
Mostly I found this hard to get through, but it got pretty epic towards the end there! :)
"Other women cloy/The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry/Where most she satisfies." I think that's pretty much all.
When Antony meets Cleopatra they both fall for each other. But they cannot be together fully. He is the general to Caesar the Roman emperor and she is the queen of Egypt. Caesar attempts to keep them apart but in the end it leads to warfare and death.
This book gave the perfect Shakespeare tragedy vibe. The only thing is I wished it was longer. I feel like the beginning oils have been extended to really pull out the drama and then the ending felt rushed and very chaotic. As always his characters act so thoughtlessly and abrupt before they can realize the consequences of their actions.

enjoyed even though it was for school, interesting to analyze as well.
I really wanted to like this one but sadly for the first half the story, there was just something about it that didn't gel together. It only gripped me in the second half when the scenes started boiling down to the key four and then Cleopatra, Anthony and Cleopatra again.
