A hot stew of disturbing, depressing dystopia. Boy, this book stressed me out. But it's also compelling, addictive, and downright eerie. It's kind of left me speechless. I won't be able to get this out of my brain for awhile; the kind of thing where I'll drift off back into its world while I'm bringing the pasta pot to a boil. Misses 5 stars because it could have used some editing - 430 pages was way too long. But that doesn't matter - I wouldn't have missed this for anything.

Warning: Between the gratuitous violence and coverage of many dark topics, this may not be for everyone. I'd maybe liken it to philosophy that reads like a Chuck Palahniuk novel.

Halfway through, I still wasn't sure if I liked this book - I even considered putting it down altogether. Having finished it, however, I will be immediately recommending it to friends & probably buying a few copies to give out.

"Anthem" is right.

Smart, well-written, imaginative, gripping at times….. But literally the single most depressing book I’ve ever read, and I’ve read The Road. So close to home it nearly gave me a panic attack.

I dont know how or where to begin to talk about this book and that it gains a positive reading is of grave concern to me.
Its twisted in so many ways that maybe I need to step away and return to this review
I am back and I do consider this to be a dangerous book in terms of the position of the author on good and bad and make no mistake the line in the sand is sharp.

***&1/2 * The TV maverick of Fargo and Legion fame comes back to the world of fiction in a blaze of ambition! Hawley swings for the fences and hits a solid triple, if not a home run, with this mega-thriller taking on just about every contemporary ill in American society and sending it all on a doom spiraling adventure into the near future. Anthem feels like one of those shaggy Stephen King epics with a bit of Vonnegut style speculative satire, and a dash of Chuck Palahniuk's unflinching darkness.

⁸This book will stay with me for a while and has been on my mind constantly since cracking it open... what to say? it's incendiary, and terrifying, and truthful and divisive (only if you're stupid)... I do not understand how this book will receive less than a four star rating unless you do not like books that challenge or force you to consider.... this book is a modern more-terrifying "The Stand" and it is embedded in the zeitgeist of today's most important questions. I don't think I'm overstating how much this book is good. I will reread it and enjoy it again, which amazing books should ask you to do. Great characters in an incredible not-too-dystopian world that it doesn't taste all too familiar...this is a really really good one, folks
