Went into this thinking it was actually going to be sci-fi so maybe that was the issue. The second half was much better than the first (which REALLY dragged for me) and whilst there were lots of great passages and intelligent observations it was confusing overall and just didn't find myself enjoying it - about 60 pages in I realised it wasn't actually sci fi and a lot more likely representative of how neuro divergent people experience the world and that's an interesting angle which clearly resonates with a lot of people as getting great reviews but just didn't hit for me. Was considering giving it a 2 for a long time but the last 1/3 ish bumped it up

Achingly profound and deeply relatable. So full of love and compassion for humanity, even when seen from the perspective of someone who feels so very different. I felt such a kinship in the narrator's way of observing others. As a young undiagnosed autistic person I also used to sit and watch everyone around me and feel mystified by their choices and drives. This book reminded me of Harriet the Spy for similar reasons.

A real sleeper hit. Don't pass this up if you're neurodivergent.

SO GOOD. You can interpret Adina however you want—as an autistic, asexual woman who never grew into her body, or as a literal alien who has lost contact with her home planet—but it doesn’t matter. She has the same experience regardless of the stage dressing. The imagery is so vivid in this book yet doesn’t feel flowery at all.
