I had high hopes starting this book as I never read a Judy Blume book before. It was always referred to as a classic, so I decided I would finally read one. I was deeply disappointed. Margaret was such an annoying character, I understand all 11 year olds can be annoying, but she was off the charts. It follows her through her whole sixth grade school year as she tries to find her religion. Sorry to say, it was just not an enjoyable read.

This book deserves all the praise it got for its direct and relatable description of the worries and reality of being a 11-12 year old girl. While never directly placed in time, it is clearly set in a time before internet and phones. The book nicely balances being clear about the tween issues without being too overwhelming.
I think it could be pivotal to a tween reader even now, and might have been for me if I had read it 40 years ago. I somehow never read it as a child and because of it's recent return I decided to finally pick it up. I'm glad I read it.

Just read this for. Refresh before going to see the film with my daughter. It also happens to be our Banned Book Club section this month. It brought back memories! Still love it about 30 years later!

Grades 4-7
I read this growing up and remember enjoying it then, but was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked rediscovering it. Judy Blume's stories really do have a timelessness about them (in spite of the fact that most people nowadays aren't waiting for the drugstore to deliver an order, and the days of all the hats in church are thankfully behind us). Twelve-year-old girls have boys and bras and periods on the brain-- did in 1970, do now--and one of the things that makes Blume so great is the way that she embraces that. And Margaret's monologues with God are so genuine. Truly a treat to hear this one again.
