This was such an upsetting read, given how much I enjoyed book 1 and 2 as well as the novellas. Unfortunately, Elloren reverted back to how she was in most of book 1 and completely wiped away any development from book 2. We see her continuously running away, crying, and finding herself in situations in which she does nothing to fight or stand up for herself.

Couple this regression with the lack of any forward movement on the plot, I really struggled to even get halfway (where I stopped). We are fed the exact same information already know and have next to no advancement in the plot lines we have been following. Even if there may have been forward movement in the second half of the book, I couldn't bear another several hundred pages of nothing.

Finally, the way Elloren, Lukas' and Yvan's relationship was handled was the final straw for me. What do you mean Elloren is not going to do everything in her power to fight against the forced coupling with Lukas? What do you mean Elloren immediately discards any thought, grief, or sorrow over Yvan's alleged death? Which, having not finished, I can't claim for certain but I am pretty sure Yvan didn't die..... which means what for when he comes back into Elloren's life and she has to explain she chose Lukas within 2 days of his "death"???

It was all very icky for me and I just couldn't continue. I'm so sad to have to stop my journey here on what I thought was such a promising series.

The world, Erthyia, that Laurie has built is compelling and astonishing. The attention to detail that she gives transports the reader into her world and holds the reader tight to the story. I love the inner turmoil that Elloren has in the midst of so much loss. She is indeed losing everyone she loves in this war with Vogel and because Laurie has created a world, character, and story that enraptures the reader, I felt like I was losing these characters that I had also grown to love. I sobbed reading this book. I didn't know how the story could be more emotional than the previous book (Iron Flower), but I found out. This series is easily becoming one of my all-time favorite series.

another great book in the series

A lot of info dump in the beginning with new characters. You will want to read slowly as they are important to the story. I liked book two the best so far and am excited that book four just came out so I can continue the journey. #TeamBlackWitch
