Trialed this for my Short Story Book Club but went with another theme.
It's a good example of irony and a nice twist. Written in the 1920s (?) it's a bit dated. I didn't think the students would care for it.

This is a lovely story at any time, but I particularly love the illustrations by P.J. Lynch in this edition -- you can so clearly see their emotions in the way she has fallen back against the table and the way he has sprawled on the sofa.

This story makes no sense to me. I don't know why they value gifts so much. Also, sacrifices are something I'm wary about. I think there is a big chance of the person making the sacrifice wanting something in return at some point.

The idea/moral of the story is nice but I didn't like the style of the story(not sure it's because I'm a non-native speaker) and the references. 2/5

I taught this to my freshmen. I forgot how much I like Jim and Della. The lesson seems to be that love doesn’t need to be shown by expensive gifts. The gesture both made is significant. I liked it as much as the students.

Goodreads Summer Reading Challenge 2019
Short & sweet: Read a book with less than 100 pages.

Sooo... what? That's kinda my reaction. I've seen a lot of raving reviews, and I was underwhelmed.

I knew it was a short story, but I didn't think it was gonna be this short. It was less than 5 pages on my Kindle. I almost don't want to mark this as read and have it count toward my book-goal, as it seems like cheating...

Five pages is usually not enough space to build any kind of reaction in me, unless it manages to surprise me or otherwise blow my mind, and this story does neither. The "twist" ending was predictable, so I was waiting for some other part of the story to be amazing - some gist of knowledge, something to leave me thinking - but in the end I was just... underwhelmed. The story is cute, but unmemorable.

Short and sweet with a sad hilarity! This cute Christmas classic is a true delight.
