This one was solid. Like 3.5 stars I would say. The beginning was SO unrealistic that it killed it a little for me but the last half was very good. Except Tiddy??? That’s the nickname you choose?? Yikes

Also at this point in the series I want the first protagonists back. I didn’t need Matthieus

So in this book, we get to see things from Matthias's point of view! (Yeah, when I found that out, I had no idea who the heck he was. Later I found out that it was one of the kids that Nina got imprisoned with. So yeah, just putting it out there so you don't get confused)

So, Matt's friends (the ones that were in the prison with Nina) and him are at this school and they're sleeping. Suddenly the Population cops come in, drag every last kid into some room and spout a whole lotta garbage about how they're draining resources and they don't deserve to eat because they're not working for them (recruitment speech...I'm guessing). And so, all these kids get taken on these buses. Matt and Co. plan on escaping, which they do...just with pretty bad injuries.

Matthias is really an awesome character and I appreciate his initial viewpoint about he felt bad about causing harm to the Population Police and thought about if there was a way to avoid causing harm to either parties. I found this to be unique, because everyone else just wanted to like...destroy all the cops. And yeah, they have good reasons to want that, but I still found it interesting that Matt didn't want to at first.

I'm hoping very badly that the next book has all the 3rd children freed, I'd be miserable forever if it didn't.

I don't know if I like the fact that the author chose to write 3 of the books in this series from Luke's point of view, One from Trey's point of view, One from Nina's point of view, and One from Matthias's point of view.I wish they had all been written from one point of view or all written from different points of view. The author's choice of changing point of view confuses the reader about how much they should care about each character in each book. This book does advance the story along quite a bit though.

Good series for young readers, not quite enough to keep an adult fully entertained, though the idea is great. I breeze through these in about a day!

Continuing my Shadow Children series reread, we finally get to read a book from Matthias’ perspective. When he saves the life of a Population Police officer, they bring him into headquarters and decide he should begin training as an officer. They need men with his bravery fighting on their side, after all. Readers will recognize Matthias as a returning character and know that he is an illegal third child, but the Population Police are not aware. His path crosses with another familiar character, Nina, and she enlists him in a plot to overthrow the Population Police from the inside. We follow along as Matthias struggles against what is right and wrong, trying to keep his identity and the fact that he is working with rebels a secret.
