A story of bravery (to cross the ocean) and love of family (to save her earnings for her grandmother to join her).
Beautifully illustrated narrative of the European immigrant experience. Raises interesting questions for me about what distinguishes various immigrant groups.
This is one of my all time favorites and one of the picture books my daughter won't part with.
The story gets two stars, the illustrations four. So three stars in between.
Loved this book! It reminded me of All of a Kind Family, one of my favorite series.
Engrossing portrayal of one girl's immigrant experience. Fairly text heavy, so a good fit for upper elementary students. It would be interesting to compare this book to ones that explore the modern immigrant experience.
Just lovely... especially PJ Lynch's paintings.

I almost weeded this book today and then I stopped to read it. It isn’t a picture book for younger readers but the illustrations are stunning and the story of immigration is a very important one.
