I highly recommend this series. Alanna is one of my new favorite strong, complex female characters. Now I want to pick up all the rest of Tamora Pierce's books!

I've read this series at least eight times and I still cry every single time I finish this book. Maybe it's because Alanna's grown up so much; maybe it's because I grew up with her.
There's something so deeply emotionally wrenching and satisfying about learning and losing many things in such a short span of time. I'll never be over Thom, or Faithful, or Raoul's leg or Gary's optimism. But those who remain will put the pieces together and make something beautiful out of the wreckage, and that's why Alanna--pigheaded and eternally willing to try and learn and ENDURE--more than almost any other fantasy heroine of my childhood, makes me believe in the future.
How can you help but love a woman whose secret to success is out-stubborning, out-sassing, and out-lasting anything and anyone that stands against her? This series was formative to me and, while I freely admit that many of Pierce's later works are better, Alanna (alongside Eilonwy and Eowyn) is the girl who taught me to be great.

This one just didn't do it for me like the others... not sure if I kept getting distracted because things were confusing, or if I got confused because I kept getting distracted (i.e., it wasn't keeping my interest)... either way... meh.

Not to be dramatic, but like every other character in this book, I would die for Alanna.

Alanna is so unknowingly toxic I was losing my mind. Her crying about how she was gonna die an old maid when she actively was dating three boys at once is BONKERS!!! Girl you can barely go 3 pages without kissing a boy I promise you’ll be fine!!!!
This series you can tell Pierce is still finding her footing, certain plot points were glossed over way too quickly and I didn’t really find myself loving the characters like I did Circle of Magic. Hopeful that future books in Tortall will have me enjoying the characters more, because Alanna had me screaming at the audio book at certain points.LIKE MAYBE DON’T VENTURE INTO A BLIZZARD ALONE WITHOUT TELLING ANYONE ALANNA! Ugh I was so irked with her these last two books. I’ll stop ranting now.
