Idk honestly. Maybe I just didn’t get it…
The positives: the writing was indeed gorgeous at times. The way each character’s internal lives were explored and their thoughts and actions woven together to create a compelling scene… incredible
That said… the actual story? It was just… weird
It felt like certain things were kind of placed into the story but not explored well, having little to no consequence, feeling out of place. Our missing girl’s motivations are quite confusing in the end, and the confusing resolution her storyline is given didn’t really feel earned or even true to her character.
This book kind of felt like watching a limited ABC drama series. The writing saved it from being truly terrible, but the overall pacing and how frustrating each of the characters were made me take a whole 5 months to finish this damn book. And I don’t even feel that satisfied.(No, not even with the little tidbit that Nath eventually goes to space)
TLDR: Similar to how I feel about Ashley Audrain’s novels, even if the plot doesn’t satisfy, the parts of the prose that really sing do make the book worth it. But this is not a quick page turner by any means

"Before that she hadn't realized how fragile happiness was, how if you were careless, you could knock it over and shatter it."
This book was so powerful and emotionally heavy, I loved every second of it. The characters all had so much depth and at one point I disliked almost all of them until the author redeemed them while still leaving me feeling like they weren’t worth forgiving.
Following the Lee family while each character deals with their grief from losing Lydia, learning all of the intricacies to each relationship, seriously such a good read.
