I didn't finish this. I read the first 20 pages, the last 20 pages and about 5 reviews and theories from book bloggers. But! It was an interesting conversation at book club.
maybe the weirdest, but also one of the most enthralling books i've ever read...
C'est glauque. C'est très glauque. C'est très TRES glauque...
While reading the book, there were a lot of times when I literally uttered (and keep in mind that I am alone and talking to no one but my ereader) "WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?!" and I would laugh like a mad man.
I like Rant a lot because it's not conventional. It's not predictable, and it's not something anyone can appreciate. And I'm sure not everyone interpreted the book the same way.
I will be very very careful, though, to whom I would suggest this book. Some would not like it because of its atrocity. To the other people who did love it, I would like to be your friend, please.

Chuck Palahniuk continues to amaze me with his brilliance as I continue to burn through his collection of works. This one is hard to describe. You pretty much just have to experience it. But one of the many things I love and respect about C.P. is, in addition to his constant ability to push all kinds of boundaries to new depths, is how each of his novels is presented in such a unique and original way. This one is certainly no different. A collection of interviews and testimonies that revolve around the life and times of Buster Casey. I wouldn't even be able to do justice to the story to try and summarize it. Let's just say it involves time travel, daytimers and nighttimers, conspiracy theories, party crashing, and rabies. In the end, it's up to the reader to figure out what they believe happened, or didn't. But I dare you not to be enamored with Palahniuk's uncanny ability to shock and awe you as he weaves his darkly funny and always interesting storytelling.
Kind of hard to follow at first, but once you realize what's happening, it's pretty hard to put down. Like most of Palahniuk's books, don't pick it up if you're easily offended. There's incest (kind of), pregnant teenagers, raging erections and rabies, among other things...
What a riot of a story. It's been likened to Fight Club and for good reasons, but while it does not reach the heights of Fight Club (mainly because the movie propelled that book into the legendary category), it shows that Palahniuk is always trying to experiment with his writing style - this is very cleverly told. Never boring, often confusing, but ultimately very satisfying!

When asked in an interviw during the Rant reading, he said he tries to write books that they can't make a movie out of. I thought it was achieved in Invisible Monsters, and I never really saw the appeal of Echo. The paragraph perspectives that composed the book made it awkward to read at first, but this book made me look back in his work and reading reviews on this site about how people don't understand his following, and don't care for him, I think I have the answer. Chuck makes science fiction out of our dreary evry day lives; the stay at home mom, or twenty-something with a desk job, the townies, drop-outs, and blue collars are told our lives repackaged in the world of Chuck, and we like it. It makes are mediocrity feel full of possibilities, if you're happy with mediocrity or crave deep sci-fi it's not for you, just us
