I think I read this once before, in my mid-teens, and I did really like it. No, let me rephrase. I liked the idea, but this shouldn't been the book for me to try and enter Discworld.

Review Partly-Taken from The Pewter Wolf Reads
***eProof gifted by UK publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review/reaction, though I bought and listened to the audiobook, narrated by Indira Varma (with Bill Nighy reading footnotes and Peter Serafinowicz as the voice of Death [who is the Best Character!])***

I'm going to be honest: this wasn't the book for me. I really enjoyed Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax so I am going to try again with these two characters. I think I have [b:Equal Rites|8700453|Equal Rites (Discworld, #3)|Terry Pratchett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1551151034l/8700453._SY75_.jpg|583611] (the first Witches book where Granny Weatherwax makes her debut) and [b:Maskerade|11550640|Maskerade (Discworld, #18)|Terry Pratchett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1456421105l/11550640._SY75_.jpg|968513] on my kindle's TBR. But I'm, not exactly certain if the Witches collection is the best collection for me to read... maybe Death might be a better port of call. Or the Night Watch's...

There were times, where it felt bogged down and I didn't feel the need to rush back to this book and these characters. Maybe it's because this month was a really bad month for my mental health and that's affected my reading (I have quit a ton of books the past few weeks and did a huge book cull on my kindle), but you can tell this is an early Discworld. I know from chatting to some fans that the early Discworld books aren't exactly the best and struggle to find its feet, but after a few titles, the series finds itself and goes full throttle.

Plus, if there's a book that takes the mick out of Shakespeare (mainly Hamlet and Macbeth), so that's always a plus.

I'm not giving up on Discworld. I have several on my TBR and I know once I have found the collection I like, I will devour them. But Wyrd Sisters didn't really work for me. It's ok, but didn't hit that sweet spot.

Terry Pratchett can do no wrong.  Doesn't rise to the emotional heights of some of his other works, but he's doing so much here on every line and making you cackle while he does it.  I'd hang out with these witches any day.

Read most of the other Witches books before this one, and was glad to finally read the "start" and see the characters in their early forms. Fun and well-crafted, if not as absolutely fantastic as other Pratchett books, but it earns 4 stars for Granny Weatherwax's response to almost being hit by a carriage alone.

Pratchett's got enough Disc stories under his belt by this point that's it's easy to start classifying them by the major characters. This is a "witches" book through and through, and he's mined fresh comedy ore from the classic tropes of a lost heir, a murderers' guilty conscience, and more than a few familiar-sounding stories. The Disc is really bestowed some personality in this book, and various normally-inanimate objects are imbued with a great deal of humanity. Whether this was a deliberate choice to help the reader feel more "witchy" or just a maturation of the comic sensibilities of the Disc, Pratchett fills them with humor and depth. Not a laugh-out-loud entry in the series, but very solid.
