Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six: The band's album Aurora came to define the rock 'n' roll era of the late seventies, and an entire generation of girls wanted to grow up to be Daisy. But no one knows the reason behind the group's split on the night of their final concert at Chicago Stadium on July 12, 1979 . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it's the rock 'n' roll she loves most. By the time she's twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she's pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

I was definitely late showing up to the Daisy Jones & The Six party, yet better late than never, right? After reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo I knew I wanted to explore TJR's entire backlist. Although I am not a groupie by any means and don't have a musical bone in my body, I do have an understanding of the powerful nature of music. I don't know if there's much more I can add that hasn't already been said, but here's my review.

I tandem read the audio along with a physical copy and would suggest this to anyone who hasn't read it yet. Written in a documentary/interview style where each of the members of the band gives there take on the events of how the band came together and eventually fell apart. The format is what makes this story work for me. The full cast audio offers another layer of depth, where each of the voices is distinct and makes each character come to life. These factors are what made the band feel so real, as opposed to the fictional one that it is. I got to witness the high and the lows firsthand. The writing is gritty and raw. TJR does a fantastic job writing unlikeable characters and capturing the essence of misinterpretation.

I also loved the inclusion of the entire album of lyrics being included at the end of the book. I cannot begin to imagine how much extra work and research that took to get everything just right. Again, this is an ode to music and the power it has.

Daisy Jones & The Six is a tribute to an era - the sex, the drugs, and the rock 'n' roll - all brought the music world to life. There's just something so unique about TJR's writing style, each book is so different, yet so good and entertaining. I am definitely interested in watching the mini-series. And I look forward to continuing to make my way through her backlist as I await news of something new.

"Music can dig, you know? It can take a shovel to your chest and just start digging until it hits something."

"I thought about trying to force her into rehab. But you can't do that. You can't control another person. It doesn't matter how much you love them. You can't love someone back to health and you can't hate someone back to health and no matter how right you are about something, it doesn't mean they will change their mind."

~~4.5 Stars~~ 5th September 2022

“My life isn’t about me honey, it’s about you”

I thought this story was a solid 3 for me; however, listening to the audiobook version was so good. The cast was amazing and acted each part beautifully, they fully set the tone and emotion for each memory. It made the whole format of the story come alive, and I truly recommend you listen to it. The ending was another reason it got bumped to a 4-star - and maybe even higher if I reread it.
I’m not going too detailed in this review, but this book was very emotional for me, especially towards the end.
The characters were lovable and deplorable in their own way, unapologetically themselves and as Billy would say, “that’s just rock and roll”.

Details
-Plot: medium-paced
-TW: Drug Usage, Addiction, Abortion, Alcoholism
-Ending Happy/Sad/Unfinished:
HappySad? I think from the beginning, you could tell that it wasn’t going to end happy, the harshness of reality kicked in. It wasn’t going to end like a field of daisies, but right at the end, we get a glimmer of hope for a Daisy and Billy connection. The final comments from each key character was a great way to end, I’m glad they’re happy or at least on their way to it. RIP Teddy <3

-Favourite Quotes:
“My life isn’t about me honey, it’s about you” - The love Billy has for his daughters and family is greater than anything. I’m not sure why this quote was the one to break me at the end, but it did.

I love this book so much, idk what exactly it is about it but its just so good. I love that you have Billy, Daisy, Karen, Graham, Camila and Simone telling the main story and then the people who worked with the band/industry filling in the gaps and then Warren is just there chilling like he doesnt really add to much (not a bad thing tho) and then I think my favourite more for what they bring is Eddie who is really helping the ‘why did they break up sub plot’ and just spends the whole time complaining about anything and everything.
Also it makes you think the whole time that hes going to be the problem child and the reason why they broke up but he's not

The last 20% of this book is soo good, again i cant really put it into words but so much is happening and its all coming to a head and its just beautiful (makes me cry but it’s beautiful and i wouldnt change it)

Billy’s monologue (idk if its actually that but idk what else to call it) after the band talks about the SNL performance will probably always be one of my fave bits of text, the emotions in it are unmatched and no man will ever top it

Rereading it once you know who the narrator/author is really gives so many different bits so much more emotions when added to the context its just so good

Full cast which I loved as it really brought the characters to life and you really felt the emotions from them, especially from Billy (which left me crying in public several times)

I won't lie there are about 10 different POVs which does get confusing at first, especially if the character didn't introduce themselves before they started speaking, however having so many really gave you the insight of why the band fell apart and kept me hooked as the different pieces started to fall into place

If you have access to the audiobook version I can't recommend it enough
