Solid 3 stars, it is hard for novellas to be more than 3 stars to me.

It says: "new readers will find a stunning introduction to this rich world and the heart-pounding
fantasy..."

Um, no? I think to properly enjoy this, if you were to, you should have read the first book already (I'm guessing). Ultimately we have no idea who these characters are or why we should care and the novella does not help us care. It really does not help that the story feels incomplete and feels like it comes to an abrupt stop. Were all of the prequels meant to be read together as if an additional short novel? That is not usually how these prequels work.

The writing did not put me off, which was a good thing, but I could not bring myself to care about the characters or what was going on without any context to go on, which the author should have provided.

Oooo, I wasn't expecting to enjoy Tobiah's POV this much, but I AM. This novella has all the strengths of TOQ while even addressing some of the issues I had (more clarity of worldbuilding). I'm only knocking off a star because this is so obviously the very beginning of a larger narrative and reading it the day it came out was a BAD CALL because ahhhh THINGS were just happening!

I LOVE the growth I can see coming in Tobiah. His and James' relationship is precious. I AM EXCITE TO SEE HOW HE BECOMES WHAT HE BECOMES.

I just wish I didn't have to wait until September

Can't wait for the next novella!! It was delightful being back with Tobiah and James. I'm excited for more action going forward :)
