i mostly chose to read this because of the weird title, but i ended up loving it!

the story is really charming (i try to avoid that word as often as possible ..) and fun, but also intelligent with great insights into what it's like to be young and "dumb" in another country. sally jay isn't a perfect character but she is extremely likeable throughout - i'll admit that at my most ridiculous i can even relate to her a little bit.

also, i didn't realise lena dunham is a fan, but that totally makes sense looking back on it. any of the characters from girls could have been inserted into this novel. haha

To have been lauded as one of those books that are simply delightful, not least of which by Groucho Marx, and then to have read it and be not the least bit whelmed, is disappointing. The story of a wistful young woman who takes on 1950s Paris in an effort to live life is mildly entertaining, but just doesn’t do it for me. And the title, which isn’t really explained until near the very end of the book, still makes very little sense. Though, it was at least explained. As with most books I don’t fancy, there were bits and bobs that I took to, but on the whole, I was unimpressed. And then to have read the afterword about the author’s then husband being a complete asshole regarding the author’s fame from the book made me feel a bit suspect, but I still didn’t enjoy it as much as others did. To each his own, I suppose.

Lovely prose and very funny first person narrative that actively interacts with its “texthood”. Felt like it was dragging on at some points but redeems itself at the end somewhat.

Sally Jay is the original Lady Bird.
