Fun, frothy and utterly ridiculous. From the moment Sally-Jay appears in a ball gown you just fall in love with her. The plot is non-existent but that really doesn’t matter. Sally-Jay sums up being young and silly - falling in love with the wrong men, losing her passport, never doing her laundry - but she always lands on her feet and it’s great fun watching as she does.

I didn't care much for this book, in fact I didn't finish it. It wasn't terrible, just kinda boring when it was billed as being funny. I'm surprised it has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity. Not that great, but as usual, I copied some things I liked from it.
I really liked this line about people who are trying too hard to be different or radical:
"They were most of them so violently individualistic as to be practically interchangeable."
And this one about thinking you know people close to you:
"It's amazing how right you can sometimes be about a person you don't know; it's only the people you do know who confuse you."

I am a sucker for a Classic champagne bubbles book set in 1950s Paris, and when I read that this one of Great Gerwig’s all time favourites I was full of hope. It’s told from the point of view of a spoilt mid-west American rich girl who cuts a deal with her uncle that if she completes college he’ll pay for her to spend 2 years in Paris being as wild as she likes. She dyes her hair bright pink, becomes a stage actress and runs around with the bohemian set with, of course, chaos ensuing. This book was full of whimsy but it hasn’t dated well. Attempted date rape is played for laughs and though the book is semi-autobiographical, the main character has no depth.
