Kalau membaca The Weekday Brides #1, pasti tahu kalau Eliza adalah sahabatnya Sam dan Carter adalah sahabat dr Blake. Nyatanya baik Eliza dan Carter lebih sering beradu argumen jika saling berhadapan. Saat ini Eliza dan Gwen (adiknya Blake) sedang mempersiapkan pernikahan ulang antara Sam dan Blake (keduanya sepakat untuk memperbaharui janji nikah mereka setiap tahun) di Texas. Gwen yang ingin menikmati kehidupan malam di bar Texas mengajak Eliza untuk pergi ke sebuah bar. Carter dan Neil (bodyguard-nya Gwen) mengikuti mereka. Sayangnya ada perkelahian di bar malam itu yg tidak bisa dihindarkan. Carter tertangkap oleh kamera wartawan sedang berkelahi dengan Eliza di sisinya.
Seandainya Carter tidak dalam tahap pemilihan menjadi gubernur California, maka hal tersebut tidak menjadi masalah. Mereka harus memberikan konferensi pers berkaitan dgn hal itu. Sayangnya konferensi pers membuka masalah baru. Eliza yang selama ini berada di bawah status perlindungan saksi harus bersembunyi, karena kondisinya terancam. Carter menawarkan perlindungan bagi Eliza dengan cara menikah dengannya. Di samping itu, pernikahan akan memberi image yang baik untuk Carter dalam proses pemilihan.
Sebenarnya antara Carter dan Eliza sudah saling tertarik satu sama lain. Pernikahan hanyalah satu alasan bagi Carter untuk bisa memiliki Eliza. Eliza sendiri tidak menolak, meski dia ingin mendapatkan lebih dari sekedar pernikahan. Yang menarik dari karakter Carter, meski dia benar-benar tertarik secara fisik pada Eliza, dia bisa menahan diri untuk tidak tidur bersama Eliza sebelum pernikahan mereka. Bahkan di malam pertama, Carter justru tertidur setelah penerbangam panjang dari California ke Hawaii. Tentu saja dia menebusnya keesokan harinya, dan setiap hari saat bersama Eliza.
Konflik utama dalam novel ini adalah bagaimana Eliza bisa mengatasi masa lalunya, dan dukungan dari suami dan sahabat serta keluarganya.
Di novel ke 2 ini juga diceritakan Gwen yang diam2 menyukai Neil. Tapi kisah mereka nanti ada di buku 3.

This was the second book I read by the author, and to be quite honest, it wasn't much better than the first book. It followed practically the same formula as the first one, just different characters, and a slightly different script. I have to give them credit, these are quick reads...they're just not that great to me.
Surprises, one after the other
This is a romance with an element of danger. I enjoyed book two as much as book one, and even though it is nearly one a.m., Book three is calling my name. I love Ms. Bybee's writing style. Her storytelling is epic.

It was more about Eliza's drama than her relationship with Carter. And there were a lot of typos.
A solid follow up to "Wife by Wednesday," but what bothered me was the lack of editing. Silly goofs like "heals" instead of "heels" and "ally" instead of "alley" litter the pages and jerked me out of the story. Even the strongest author needs a beta reader to catch those gaffes we gloss over after reading the same passages a dozen times. Other than that complaint, this is a cute story with great characters.
I actually liked this one even better than the first one! I loved the crime in this one.
Que puedo decir, un libro que no fue excelente. La temática aguantó porque Eliza, la protagonista, esta amenazada de muerte. Y entonces la autora nos pasea por situaciones en las cuales en cualquier momento pueden atacarla. Pero la relacion de amor de esta pareja, no cierra. No enamora, no me la creo. No llegó a hacerme sentir que estos personajes son el uno para el otro. Algo faltó.

And then the author walks us through situations in which at any moment they can attack her. But the relationship of this couple does not close. It does not fall in love, I do not believe it. It did not make me feel that these characters are meant for each other. Something was missing.

I probably shouldn’t have read another of this series without having a rest in between. It was obviously a repeated formula and I was just incredibly bored. I did get through it. Just. I will probably go back to number 3 after having a break from this author as I did enjoy the first of the series.

Carter "Hollywood" Billings ist Richter und kandidiert als Gouverneur. Sein Single-Dasein kommt in der Politik schon nicht besonders gut an, dann entsteht auch noch fast ein Skandal, als er einer Freundin hilft, die in einer Bar von Cowboys belästigt wird.
Eliza ist eigentlich gar keine wirkliche Freundin, die beiden mögen sich nicht einmal besonders, sondern streiten nur, seit ihre beiden besten Freunde verheiratet sind.
Und Eliza weiß selbst nicht, warum der beschützende Carter ihr auf einmal fast gefällt. Außerdem hat sie ein Geheimnis und will auf gar keinen Fall ins Rampenlicht.
Anfangs dachte ich es wäre zu Chick-Lit-lastig und es gab dann auch kitschige Darstellungen, aber mit dem flüssigen Schreibstil und der Mischung aus Romance, Politik und Thriller-Elementen hat es mir gut gefallen.
Die Figuren sind facettenreich und authentisch.
Carter fand ich hier besonders gut. Anfangs nicht durchschaubar, männlich und beschützend. Und er ist gut, aber nicht zu gut, sondern auch mal berechnend und manipulativ, was ihn zum typischen Politiker macht, aber auch menschlich.
Die beiden passen auch zusammen und funktionieren als Protagonisten gut, auch wenn das "Prickeln" bei mir nicht so ganz ankam.
Und Elizas überraschendes Geheimnis macht das Ganze auch noch spannend und aufregend.
