Princess Alexandrina has led a sheltered life, precious heir to the throne of England, her every movement is watched and her health protected. When she succeeds the the throne she is determined to do things well and that includes casting off the influence of her Mother's companion. Supported by her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne, the Queen has to learn that she is subject to many rules of protocol and that she can't even choose her own husband without her family and government getting involved. However Alexandrina learns quickly and one of her first acts is to change her name, Alexandrina becomes Victoria and a new reign is set to thrive.
Just to start, I didn't watch the recent TV series that this book is the companion to and having read this book I'm rather pleased that I didn't waste the time! This is a cod-biography of the early years of Victoria's reign soared in so much sugar that it gives one a headache. I generally like fictionalised biographies but this is one that reads as though it were written as part of a Mills and Boon series. Politics, poverty and uprising are skated over and the central theme is the 'crush' that Victoria develops on her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. When Albert appears on the scene, all is rushed and with much heaving of bosoms!

Me ha gustado mucho. Ya cuando vi la serie me enamoró y estuve shippeando como loca Victoria-Alberto
Great book! The author did a great job. The author wrote this the same time she was writing the screen play for her show Victoria. I'm definitely look forward to that when it airs in a couple of weeks. This is perfect for anyone who loves to read historical fiction or has an interest in Queen Victoria. Highly recommend.
Listened to the audio book version on a long road-trip and this book was perfect for the marathon of 12 hour drives. Having watched the Masterpiece series by the same title, I expected a similar story. This did not disappoint. It is vibrant and imaginative in its representation of Victoria's younger years. The television series followed the book with surprising precision, and I'm glad to have been reminded of the story by hearing this version.
4.5 stars - Incredible. I really loved it.
Not having read anything about Queen Victoria before, this story was very intriguing, leading me down various rabbit holes of research. The relationship with her prime minister is totally inaccurate, but nonetheless made for a very lovely light and enjoyable read, along with creating a memorable character. Now that I have finished the novel, I will rather miss hearing the advice of Lord M.

Favorite Quote:: “I was not aware you were fighting a war, ma’am.” ... “That is because you are not a young woman, Duke, and no one, I suspect, tells you what to do. But I have to prove my worth every single day, and I cannot do it alone.”
First Sentence: A shaft of dawn light fell on the crack in the corner of the ceiling.

I don't know how accurate this book was, but it makes me want to read more about Queen Victoria. It was a very enjoyable read.
The story is of course interesting, but I felt that Goodwin's writing style was both predicable and boring. I also felt like I was expecting more from the story and I was disappointed that she takes forever to get to Albert and then it felt very rushed. So basically: plot line good, writing style not so much.
I am a huge fan of Queen Victoria. My daughter bought the audible book for me. It follows her life as a young Queen until she meets and ask Albert to marry her. I believe the TV show is based off of this book. I loved it.
