Titel: Victoria. Forfatter: Daisy Goodwin. Sider: 393. Forlag: Politikens Forlag. Udgivelsesår: 2017. Anmeldereksemplar: Politikens Forlag ★★★★
“‘De er meget smukke. Blomsterne’.

Oh! My review disappeared. Now to remember what I wrote. I am not obsessed with the royals, but I am intrigued by the whole thing, particularly the history of it. I wasn't captivated by the plot of this one, but it was a light read (I have no idea why I expected something Wolf-Hall-ish-ly dense!?!) that satisfied my interest in the traditions and history of the Royals circa 1830s.

Love the story and characters. I felt like I learned about history while also reading an entertaining story.
Review - I really enjoyed this. Even though I have seen the TV series so knew what was going to happen when I still got really hooked by this. The writing was engaging and there were small details which really drew me in and made me reread parts of the story. It is easy to see Victoria's vulnerability and Melbourne's love for her, but realising he has to step aside. It's both happy and sad at the same time, and very cleverly managed.

"In my experience an exquisite appreciation for the finer things in life can run alongside the most terrible folly." - Lord Melbourne
As a child, Victoria was kept as far away from the public eye as possible. A mere month after she turns 18, her uncle passes away and she is in the center of all the attention. She is the new sovereign. Struggling to trust anyone after being kept in the dark for so long, she finds herself a loyal friend in Lord Melbourne, her Prime Minister. Lord M takes it upon himself to guide the young Queen in her reign, unaware of how much she comes to rely on him for her every need. Victoria does relish in some of the advantages of being Queen, yet realises the one thing she truly wants, she can never have...
It turns out that I am still a sucker for a good romance. This beautiful coming-of-age story about the young, stubborn Queen Victoria was incredibly enjoyable. Everything felt so very real. I am incredibly fond of this portayal of Lord Melbourne. When it comes to Victoria, I recognised quite a bit of myself in her impulsive side. I do admire her a great deal for her courage to speak her mind and do things her way, no matter who opposes. Those were definetly not desired qualities in a Queen back then but it does her a lot of credit.

I definitely loved this book. It really delves into Victoria's way of life and what she was going through in terms of sentiments and duties upon obtaining the throne. Although I found it akin to the TV program, there were some scenes that were not examined on TV that I found fascinating whilst reading. Goodwin does a marvellous job of portraying a young woman who understands what she is destined for to a confident woman who England would be proud to call their Queen. I felt that the romance with Lord Melbourne could have been shorter and Victoria's life before she because Queen could have been explored further. A family tree somewhere in the book would have been helpful.
"I received this book for free from SheSpeaks."
I really enjoyed this book, while it isn't high drama, there is definitely enough intrigue to keep you turning the pages. The rift between Victoria and her mother both stressed me out and made perfect sense through most of the book. You truly hated Conroy and delighted any time Victoria got the upper hand on him. I loved reading about the early days of Victoria and Albert. They are always depicted as a couple deeply in love and it was fascinating to examine the earlier love/hate stage of their relationship. It must have been very frustrating to be expected to marry someone, and the author was able to express that while still making it to the inevitable end. My only regret with this book was that there wasn't more Albert. I adore Albert and it makes me home that there is a second book focusing on their married years.
I loved watching the inner workings of this time and while I know it is definently a fictionalized account, I felt the author did a very good job of sticking to the details that we know. This coming of age story is beautiful and heartfelt, perfect for people who already love Victoria or who are just being introduced to her story for the first time.
