Great stories of the power and importance of book shops and libraries in our own lives and in our communities. However, it would have been better if the book featured book sellers and librarians outside of North America.

Really nice! A good follow up to Evan Friss’ The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore. It did feel really repetitive though. It would be better if the authors isolated a few niche bookstores, unique and hidden jobs/ aspects of the book, library and book archiving industry, and focused on diverse, important (subjective, I know) and a sprinkling of wholesome stories. While I feel like most readers can relate to the ”secret lives” of the people presented, I think that you could easily cut out a few and while I’m sure all these people are wonderful, in most cases I don’t think their full backstory was necessary. Focusing on a key aspect was enough. A lot of the stories were focused on surviving Covid, booktok and book challenging/banning and while important, again it’s repetitive and doesn’t go in depth.

Not usually into short story/essay books but this one was full of lovely perspectives. Anyone who loves bookstores, libraries or reading will enjoy this one!
