This is an enjoyable series. Moving through the characters with a different perspective and timeline. I just wish it was longer.
Everything We Left Behind is the wonderfully written sequel to Everything We Keep. We find Carlos has woken from the fuge state and is now trying to cope being James. James must now try to reconnect with his sons while trying to figure out what happened in his past and who he can trust.
The story is told in alternating chapters between James life and his life as Carlos. A beautifully written story full of romance, suspense, and family drama. Thank you to Kerry Lonsdale and Lake Union Publishers for an ARC of this book.

Don't Leave This Behind. Wow. If the first book in this series was a gut punch, this one was a roundhouse to the face. Picking up several years after the events of the first book, we continue the story of one of the first book's characters and the impacted families. Amazing look into a phenomenon introduced in the first book, and some surprising twists to some of the plot lines introduced in the first book and greatly expanded upon in this one.
I've read all of this author's books so far and wasn't sure I would like one from James/Carlos POV as much as Aimee's, but I did. I missed Aimee's thoughts in this second book, but finding out more of the background into what James' life, especially the six years as Carlos, was intsightful.
It filled in some of the things I'd wondered about in Everything We Keep. The parts that really sucked me in emotionally were James loss of Aimee and Natalya's loss of Carlos. Both were heart-breaking situations.
A great read that will make you anxious for book #3 in the series - out in summer, 2018!

A very interesting sequel! Really gives you an idea of the life of Carlos and James - it’s so interesting how different they are! I would recommend reading this shortly after the first one - it has been a while for me and I found myself forgetting some of the details of Everything We Keep. I am excited to read the third in the trilogy soon!

Fünf Jahre lang hatte Carlos Angst vor dem Tag an dem er seine Söhne nicht wiedererkennen würde. Seine Verlobte Aimee hatte ihn gefunden, ihm ihre Geschichte erzählt und akzeptiert, dass es James nicht mehr gab.
Aber Carlos ist wieder James. Und James hat einflussreiche Feinde. Aimee hat aber Ian geheiratet und ein Kind, deshalb flieht er zu Natalya, der Schwester seiner verstorbenen Frau, ohne sich an ihre Beziehung zu erinnern.
Im ersten Band musste Aimee lernen ohne James zu leben. Zwei mal. Hier muss James lernen mit Carlos zu Leben, die verworrenen Verhältnisse und ein Leben verarbeiten, in dem ihm sechs Jahre fehlen.
Ich wollte wirklich gerne erfahren was James passiert ist, wie er zu Carlos wurde und wie es für ihn weitergeht. Aber ich wollte auch unbedingt, dass Ian und Aimee zusammen bleiben.
Da hat die Autorin alles richtig gemacht. Wieder mischt sie Mystery und Liebe. Und das auf so mitreißende Art, die Figuren mit ihren Schwierigkeiten so lebhaft, dass sie den Leser die Komplexität fühlen lässt.
Gemeinsam mit James, der auch erst herausfinden muss, wer er jetzt eigentlich ist, lernen wir ihn kennen.
Beim Hörbuch war es aber anfangs anstrengend zu verfolgen ob gerade Carlos aus der Vergangenheit oder James aus der Gegenwart erzählt. Auch wenn der Anschluss an den ersten Teil nahtlos ist und sich wieder alles um Familie, Liebe, Verrat und Verlust dreht, hatte ich bei diesem Buch ein ganz anderes Gefühl.
Es ist einfach weniger spektakulär, weil die plötzliche Entwicklung teils konstruiert wirkt. Die liebende, nachsichtige Großmutter hier, kann ich einfach nicht mit der unterkühlten Frau, die ein Kind mit ihrem Bruder hatte, verbinden. Auch wenn ihre Beweggründe thematisiert werden und ihre Geschichte sie etwas nahbarer macht. Phils Darstellung dagegen hat mir gefallen.
Trotzdem bleibt es eine tolle Geschichte und nach den drei Epilogen bin ich gespannt auf den nächsten Teil, auch wenn der in eine ganz andere Richtung gehen soll.

This is book #2 in the series so it wasn't as original as the first one but adds in a lot of the details that were missing from the first one. Overall, I liked the story and the characters and the author is just very good at writing. Similar to the first book, I didn't really think the graphic sex scenes were necessary and it would have been fine without those details. It's a really interesting idea/plot and I enjoyed reading it (although I read through it way too fast because I didn't want to put it down).
