This is a great story of a person who struggles and resists the fact that she is an introvert, a geek and socially awkward -- until she decides to own and embrace it (hence the creation and success of Awkward Black Girl). I enjoyed some chapter essays more than others- mostly due to my interest in the topic, i.e there was a bit too much high school era stuff for me. I think she's a talented writer and performer and look forward to what else she will do in the future.

For the record, I think Issa Rae is wonderful, but I don't think she's far enough along in her career to share her stories and experiences. I couldn't finish this book. There was nothing unique or captivating about her life. In a later chapter she talks about not being to buy CDs with Parental Advisory labels. Just couldn't finish it.

I first heard of Issa when I watched her show Insecure. I immediately fell in love with it. Being a woman of 28, a lot of the issues she dealt with were not unlike ones I have experienced. Reading this book just made me like her more. I think we've all experienced a moment (or moments) of awkward in our lives. It's nice when someone is brave enough to own it and talk about it openly so us other awkward-feeling and introverted people know we're not alone.

Lol, sloppy Joe! Issa Rae is hilarious. I was surprised to learn that her dad got married without telling her. I can relate, as my mom has never said ‘I love you’ and still doesn’t. Those Myspace top 8 days really take me back! Overall, it’s a good read but not amazing.
