As a fan of Issa Rae, I loved learning stories from her childhood and how she sees herself. Written in 2015, it is neat to reflect on how far she has come since penning this memoir.

Funny. Occasionally shows off Issa Rae’s great comedic style but honestly it fell flat a lot of the time. It’s very similar to a lot of the comedy memoirs of recent years (like Bossypants) and often they seem a little like disjointed anecdotes. This one is similar. I think the format is too limiting for Issa’s talent and voice.

A collection of essays that are a great casual read. As an awkward black girl this is a must read!

Issa is hilarious. I've been a fan for a few years and have been meaning to pick up this book for a while. Cute, fast read and interesting info on her background. More of a guide than a book, as she often gravitates to explaining how to navigate the world as an "Awkward Black Girl." This is information I would have found very helpful 20 years ago.

A really funny, swiftly paced book, which gave me more background on Issa Rae, who I hadn't paid much attention to since 2011, when I discovered ABG on YouTube. Ends sort of abruptly, but was an incredibly enjoyable read!

hope she writes another memoir because this was kinda meh.

why did she offhandedly come for filipinos like that 😭

this was a fun listen. definitely related to some of her stories, and was cool to hear more about her background and growing up.

I love stories about nerds and misfits since I can relate. Issa Rae’s stories are so hilarious.
