I won this book in a giveaway, but never received my copy. Maybe it got swiped?
Regardless, it looked funny and I wanted to read it, so I borrowed it from the library.
I was completely unfamiliar with Issa Rae's other work, but she was compared to Mindy Kaling and I love Mindy Kaling. Issa Rae is equally as lovable, although I didn't find her to be as funny. There's moments, but I wasn't laughing out loud. It was fun and light, and relatable in the way that most stories of awkward girls growing up are.

relatable...but fizzled out near the end.

I love Issa Rae's HBO show, Insecure and one of my favorite parts is the friendships in her life. I was excited to spend time getting to know the real Issa. I liked the way the book was not linear but rather organized by themes. I hope she continues to find success because hers is a voice I really enjoy.

I thoroughly enjoyed Issa Rae's humor, which is a very difficult thing to convey in writing but she succeeded nonetheless. Touching on a range of topics (early internet personalities, body image, hair health, PDA, relationship with father, dating, music, biculturality, and more), Rae gave readers a chance to get to know her early ambitions as a writer, director, musician, and more. If there's anything I've taken away from Rae's book, it's that creative passions require a lot of investment (financial and time), and Rae started and knew what she wanted to do from a very young age (even if she occasionally got distracted. While I'm inspired, I'm also reminded that I don't have a wealthy father to help me foot my bills and passions until I "make it." Nonetheless, I'm a massive Issa Rae fan and was glad I got to learn more about her upbringing and how it led her to where she is now!

I've been a fan of Issa Rae since season 1 of ABG. This book solidified my fandom. The essays were smart, funny and enlightening. I especially enjoyed the ABG guides that were sprinkled throughout the book. The only thing that I can say is that I wish the book was a little longer. I would recommend this book to a friend.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. It gave me so much insight into Issa Rae’s life, and I learned things I didn’t know before. For instance, her Senegalese heritage, the fact that her father is Senegalese, and her ability to speak French, which she grew up speaking, were fascinating to discover.

Many of her experiences resonated deeply with me. The chapter about corruption in Senegal, especially how police officers accept bribes, hit close to home. Her struggle with her hair texture, which differed from her mother’s, was so relatable, as were her experiences of bullying in school. Even her stories about workplace relationships, particularly the passive-aggressive dynamics with middle-aged white women, were painfully accurate yet hilarious.

I loved seeing how elements of her life inspired her hit show Insecure. Her wit and comedic voice shine throughout the book, and I laughed out loud more times than I can count. It’s a perfect blend of humour and heartfelt honesty.

I’d give this book 4.5 stars—funny, relatable, and a great read overall!

Issa Rae may be awkward, but she is honest as hell. She takes a deep, reflective look at her life. It was a joy to read and learn about the hurdles she had to overcome; How she turned the experience into comedic gold for HBO.
