Some chapters are true gems. As a whole, a solid read. I had previously watched the series and ultimately feel the same way - I'm glad it's out there, and it said some funny and valuable stuff, but it's not my absolutely favorite thing. I think I feel similarly about Issa Rae's work that I do towards Mindy Kaling's, although I think I'd rather get a drink with Rae than Kaling, if I had the chance.
besides the constant body shame - it's a wonderful read. hilarious and I LOVED IT!
My first encounter with Issa Rae was from watching her Awkward Black Girl web series http://awkwardblackgirl.com , which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thus, I was excited to see that she was releasing this book, and I looked forward to reading it.
In this book, Issa Rae gives an inside look at her life growing up as a self proclaimed awkward black girl. The journey includes her rise to Internet stardom, as well. There are also ABG Guides throughout the book that give humorous insight to things like Connecting to Blacks, The Hair Advantage, and Black Women and Asian Men.
The book was a short, light read. I expected the same level of hilarity of the ABG web series, but the book falls a little bit short of that. The ABG guides were often humorous. Some other content was humorous, but I expected more laugh out loud moments. Nevertheless, this was an overall interesting read about her cultural and social experiences that should appeal to many, especially if you have seen any of her video work. Now that I have read this book, I plan to go back and view some of her series again.

Interesting view points and many MANY unexpected stories. Fun and quick read. A little disjointed at times. I think I should’ve watched the show first maybe. That’s on me. Issa Rae seems cool though. I wish we got to see more of her process in the book.
Love Issa, a few good stories in here but mostly it’s a bit stale and cheesy. But for a first book, slay

This memoir by Issa Rae is a touching look back on her childhood in Maryland and California as a black immigrant child (well, kind of immigrant; I'm not sure where she was born, but her family moved to her father's home country, Senegal, as a young child, then moved back to the States later). The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl was the webshow that propelled Issa Rae to fame, but it sounds like she was always awkward - as many of us are as children. The book primarily looks at the period from about 12-20-something years old and delves into topics as diverse as begin black in an all-white elementary school, trying to be cool as a teenager, doing stupid things to attract love-interests, the divorce of her parents, early work experiences, etc. It was fun, light-hearted and endearing.
