I like to read memoirs/nonfiction (because when you aren't even middle aged and write a memoir, do we call it that?) even of people I'm not necessarily familiar with. Didn't work out in this case.

3.5 Man, this one was kind of a disappointment. I think Issa Rae's amazing charm and humor and charisma just doesn't really shine through in this book. It was fine, but definitely not as engaging as I was hoping it would be.
So fucking funny and heartwarming. God I love Issa Rae
It was funny, and cringe-worthy and even relatable at points.

I'm a huge fan of Issa Rae, and am proud to say that I own a signed copy of this book! She's just as funny and awkward in person as she comes off as in her youtube show. When I found out that she was writing a book of the same title, I was clearly excited. She didn't disappoint, either. One of the things I love about Issa Rae is that she has created a voice for all the awkward black girls in the world, myself included. She hits home with some of the stereotypes we tend to encounter, but she also mixed in her own personal stories from her childhood and growing up in the States and Africa. I laughed, took mental notes, and sympathized for her. I'm so happy that she was able to accomplish this, and I know it's already on the New York Times bestseller list. Anyways, it's a great read, quite similar to Mindy Kaling's book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? So if you enjoyed that then you'll definitely enjoy this.
