I tried to read this book and just couldn't stay focused. The only reason I finished it was listening to it via audible on long drives. It had a few good parts that I enjoyed but overall not for me.

My first exposure to Issa Rae was her amazing HBO show "Insecure." This book is not as universally relatable as the show, but I think it speaks to her personality and her audience. The best parts about it are the "ABG Guides" in which Issa explains in detail how to identify and deal with various personality types or behavior.

Love this book!

I liked but didn't love. I don't know much about Issa Rae and I'll definitely be checking out ABG. The audiobook was well done by the author.

I read a lot of celebrity and/or powerful women memoirs. You know what 90% of them always have a chapter on? Weight. And frankly, I'm a little tired of it. I don't necessarily blame the writers. I just wish that they could focus their entire book on their thoughts and their life instead of having to let everyone know about their weight struggles. Do I identify with their struggles? sure. It's just sad and frustrating that powerful, groundbreaking, funny, intelligent women have to constantly be asked about their weight and how they "deal" with it if they don't look like the models in magazines or they aren't the typical Hollywood body type. I'm sure their sick of it too.

Well this was disappointing. But yes, fine, I’ll watch Insecure again.

Hilarious, relevant, and amazing!!! She’s definitely my hero!!!

As an Awkward Black Girl series fan, I’ve become a follower of the ABG empire and Issa Rae inspired things. When I heard she had a book coming out, I was so excited. Unfortunately, after it was released, I took a little while getting to it. Long TBR and such, ya know?

I finally got to borrow it from the library on audiobook & ebook for some guided reading and easy listening. I finished it in less than 24 hours.

This was the first audiobook I’d ever listened to that was read by the author. Having Issa Rae read definitely enhanced the experience. It takes away so much “mystery”. You don’t have to worry or think about how the author might read the character because hello the author is the character.

In Misadventures, Rae gives tips and tells short stories about her family, coming of age, culture, and romance all under the umbrella of navigating life as an Awkward Black Girl (ABG). While I may not be a textbook ABG, I could definitely relate to some of Rae’s examples and how the relate to the black experience.

Some are the stories are serious. Some are hilarious. Some are seriously hilarious. All of them educate while they entertain. Even when the morals in Rae’s stories aren’t directly stated, they still make you think. My favorite story was the one about the pronunciation of her last name. Cultural/Individuality expression in the workplace can be a delicate issue and Rae approaches it with witty commentary.

I definitely look forward to seeing/reading/hearing more of Rae’s work. Power to the ABGs!

Perfect book to take along while traveling. I really enjoyed how Issa Rae's voice came through in this book, and how honest she was about her awkwardness.

Laugh out loud funny and clever. Totally worth the read!

Issa Rae is very relatable and funny.
