Not funny, fat phobic, seemed to endorse disordered eating habits
Minor: Body shaming, Eating disorder, Fatphobia
The book wasn’t as great as I hoped it to be. Though it was very funny, insightful into what made Issa Rae “Issa Rae” it lacked interest in many areas. I wish that she would’ve tied her stories into her current life more or gave us readers a stronger ending.

I have mixed feelings about this book, because parts of it I thought were ... of questionable wisdom, I guess (the author's obsession with her weight and her classifications/stereotypes of people's personalities and behaviors in "Connections with Other Blacks"). But other parts I appreciated quite a bit (how the author had to deal with her parents' divorce and the parts about her education, beginning career, and love life "misadventures"). I'd recommend the book, but with a caveat on some of the earlier, iffier sections.
The unique and hysterical voice you expect if you know Issa Rae’s work, a refreshing and quick read.
I thoroughly enjoyed the writing by Issa Rae. I felt like she was more of telling me a story than can easily be recited instead of an in depth and complicated prose. The book covered culture, nationality, identity, taking benefits of risks, and an insight into the vast differences in experiences of women of color in the U.S. I can personally relate to a lot of what was shared.
I struggled with the structure of the book. It wasn't very linear (which isn't necessarily an issue), but more of struggled to see the connections between chapters. Some stories were more memoir based (somewhat disjointed), and some were more idioms as it relates to the nature of 'awkward blackness.'
Overall, I think Issa Rae is brilliant is just at the beginning of her career.
