Okay, this might be closer to 4 stars, but I happily bumped it to 5 stars since I just love Issa Rae so much. I picked this book up immediately after finishing Yvonne Orji’s book, since I’m clearly on an Insecure kick.

I loved how this book blended Issa’s trademark humor with relatable stories of growing up with immigrant parents - I was shocked with how similar some of her memories reflected my own, at times. I also loved all her references to 90’s hip hop classics, like Mase, Nelly, Puff Daddy, Biggie, Missy Elliott and on and on - so nostalgic, whether or not that was intentional.

I’ve been a fan of Issa Rae since 2011, when a friend introduced me to her Awkward Black Girl web series, which helped launch her career. I’m just so delighted with her success today - her comedy is sharp, smart and relevant, and she’s worked so hard to make her magic happen. I’m actually inclined to now go back and re-watch ABG, for old times’ sake!

The more that I think about this book the more I don’t like it. I wanted to really really like it but it’s just…. Meh. And the disappointment is gathering the more I ruminate.

This books was very related in every way, especially in the fact that I too am an awkward black girl. I loved learning about the life of Issa Rae growing up and the struggles she has overcome to get her where she is today. I honestly would recommend this book to anyone! Terrific Read.

A fun collection of essays by an incredibly talented woman. A little disjointed but relatable easy reading.
