I only read the first half. The essays in the first half are neither funny nor touching. I feel like she's just getting warmed up on a topic when each piece ends.

You should know that Issa Rae can do no wrong in my eyes. I was really inspired when I finished this book, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that it was my third time trying. There were moments when her notorious wit shined through, but I wonder if this medium just doesn’t suit her storytelling style. Much of her brilliance is displayed through her awkward (complimentary) delivery and comedic timing, and that didn’t always translate here. The good news? It finishes strong!

A huge fan of Issa Rae’s work, it was intriguing to learn more about her personal life and her experience. Lighthearted and funny, I enjoyed reading this memoir.

I’ve loved Issa Rae since watching her YouTube series in college.
This was my 1st time reading this. It’s funny, relatable & gives you insight into her life which makes you love her more. As a millennial, a lot of references felt personal and nostalgic.
I’m glad I read it but I wouldn’t reread it.

Hmmm. I didn't know anything about Issa Rae leading into this, and it might have helped if I did. There wasn't anything exceptional for me here, but I did finish it so that's something.

Recently, I was added to a Facebook book club group. The chosen book was The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. Having always longed to be a member of a book club, I was excited to start the book right away. I decided to purchase the audiobook version of the book via Audible, and I must say that I wasn't disappointed. The humor that is found in Issa Rae's YouTube Series and HBO Series has been translated in the text of her book.
The themes of the book are family, self-esteem, coming of age, struggle for acceptance, and life lessons. I think that what I enjoyed the most about the book is that the audiobook is read by Issa Rae, so you hear her quirkiness throughout the text. I found myself chuckling out loud numerous times, which contributes to the book being very relatable.
Even though I would not categorize this book as an inspiring autobiography, I would share that it provides enlightenment about her life and how she arrived to be such a fantastic storyteller. This book is a quick read and enjoyable. I enjoyed the flow of the book and was not bored at all. So I did give it a 5 out of 5.

I absolutely love Issa Rae but I found this kind of boring. I really wanted to like this
