My sister loves this book and I was deeply ambivalent

I might try it again at another time, but once I got to chapter 9 titled 'Major Major Major Major', I couldn't go on. I have wanted to read this book for a while, but I have other books I would much rather read than this. I'll try again later, but the conversations that take place in the book really got me.

Didn't think I would finish this one. Not that I didn't like it, but at times the absurdity of it all just made it too difficult to go on.

Catch-22, looks at war and the bureaucracy that accompanies it, through episodes of absolute hilarity. From Milo and his "businessman" antics to the going-no-where conversations that we find Yossarian indulging in so often, the comic element is present throughout the novel. But even with all this humor and wit at his disposal, the author manages to give us a good hard look at the despair and frustration that underlines this story. It's amazing how laughing through a few pages I suddenly found myself caught up in completely different emotions.

But then it was too long a satire, 400+ pages! At one point, everytime I started a new chapter, I found myself flipping back to see how long the chapter was and then I would count the pages off until I reached its end; not a good sign when I begin doing that.

Overall, it was a good read. I might even recommend it to others, that is, if they don't mind slogging through it and can put up with the chaotic narration.

I was skeptical of people when they told me how funny this book was. I saw that it was over-400 pages, and couldn't imagine anything sustaining humor for that long. And then this book did. That's all I really have to say, I'd rather not mention anything about the plot, because it really doesn't matter - you start reading it and you can't stop.
