It’s a short story featuring DCI Matthew Venn as he encounters two girls on the beach in front of his house.
PROS:
  • In true Ann Cleeves fashion, it had great atmosphere and characters.
  • Gives a bit more insight about Matthew and Jo’s background. Good for fans of the series.
CONS:
  • It feels like it should be a novel rather than a short story.
  • The reveal
about the older girl being a psychopath
is underwhelming. I think a longer story would’ve made it better.

Nice short story staring Matthew Venn who, for once, doesn’t have a murder to solve.

A well-crafted short story - love seeing a bit of Matthew and Jen between books.

2X Yes on discovering it was on Audible I read a 2nd time. And it made me love it even more.

1X Happiness is waking up early to read the new Detective Matthew Venn Short Story - The Girls on the Beach.

It's definitely a short story at 16 pages. I finished reading before I finished my morning tea.But Matthew and Jen are there. As well as the beautiful imagery that Ann Cleeves is so brilliant at.

If you're a fan of Ann Cleeves' Vera Stanhope there's also a 3 Chapter/14 Page Excerpt of next in that series The Rising Tide which is coming in September.

As yet I've only read  the first Vera Book which I enjoyed.  I've said it before, sometimes it's nice to be late to party. I look forward to reading the whole stack of Vera.

And now that I've enjoyed this early morning treat I'm on to my day.
