I felt like it was not AS great as the Queens Assassin, I felt there was a lot of sitting around, brooding, waiting, mooing, complaining. I kept waiting for Lilac to make a great escape and flee the castle, to sneak off, to create some grand scheme that demanded her to leave the castle… instead she sinks into pretending to be meek, helpless and weak to match the assumptive descriptions of the old commanding men around her l, not to mention her mother who abandoned her most of her life with her aunts and has had little to do with her. In the first book she is dating, wild, risky, Independent despite this patriarchal and royal system, but suddenly in this book she’s… helpless? Stuck in fate? I didn’t like the shift and I expected way more action. I didn’t hate it though, was just disappointed for the turn it took after how much I loved the first.

I fucking hate a miscommunication trope, and when literal kings and queens get bossed around like children.
However, I do like children that are smarter than all the idiot grownups around them.
Those three stars are for Jander and the aunts and them alone.

Lilac and Cal- lost their personalities and just became simpering lovesick fools. If only I could see Cal, hold him, caress his face….over and over again. Same for Cal- does she still love me, is she with her husband. The part I was trying to finish the book for was like 2/3 chapters worth the book.
THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE FIRST BOOK! I read the first book and was incredibly bored. It was just average i gave it 3 stars. Now I look back at it and feel like the first book barely touches the surface of the intricacy of this world. This book was so good! The ending was better than everything I hoped it to be! It's worth getting through the first book. The writing was style was simple but very effective. I struggle to read due to my depression as my brain struggles to comprehend information and focus. Because of the writing style I was actually able to read it. I highly recommend this series just for the sake of the second book haha.

Had trouble getting into it, which tracks with my history with Melissa de la Cruz, but then couldn't put it down once things really started happening and the woe-is-me was no longer the focal point of the story... which also tracks with my history with Melissa de la Cruz.
It's a very satisfying ending to this duology, with every character getting a very well earned ending. A couple of things do feel rushed and there's really not much explanation as to why some things happen, but it's still a solid ending.
