I really enjoyed this over the course of a long car ride. The first half was really good but the second half fell a bit flat. I didn’t understand why the mc’s fell back in love and it didn’t have the slow-burn angst I wanted. It was more miscommunication and odd pacing. However, I liked the setting of the book and how the mmc came into his development and reconciliation with his family. (Except his mom, she needed to do better) His character development was just so strong that hers was lacking and boring in comparison.

While this book does a lot to set up the series as a whole (Ben’s book when!! And Pippa too!!) I did really like having to reckon with the knowledge that people we love are flawed and callable and complicated. But that doesn’t mean we compromise the truth or pretend everything’s okay.

Great for Pride and Prejudice movie fans - the Keira Knightley version, of course. Angsty in a good way, although Devlin will try your patience before the end!

Long. I enjoyed the story but it could have been told in half the pages.

Mary Balogh is one of my favorite authors; yet, this is not her best work. After finishing the Westcott series I was really looking forward to this new one! It didn’t live up to what I had concocted in my mind.

The plot development was pretty slim; yet, there was so much fluff in there I felt sidetracked at time. I had a hard time connecting and empathizing with some of the characters. Oh well, on to the next read!

Pacing issues, an overused second chance at love trope with the woman who waited and the man that didn't, and not enough time spent with the main characters
Young Devlin was so sweet, War Devlin not so much. I wanted to read a whole book with young Devlin, with all his soft and shy ways.

Beginning in 1808 at Ravenswood, the estate of the Earl of Stratton, Balogh’s historical romance tackles the point in a young person’s life: twenty-two year old Devlin, when they have the devastating realization that their parents are human and flawed.

I liked this much more than I was expecting to like it. There is something about MB's writing that is so compelling. The story starts out a bit too slow and descriptive for my tastes, so had to skim the first 3 chapters. But the pace really picks up afterwards, and how! Love it, love it.
