The bulk of this long series was excellent. Towards the end, however, it began to fracture. In a few of the books, the main character, Tom Ward, doesn't even make an appearance. Then this book short changes the Spook and Alice's stories. Their story arcs get a big "huh?!" and "what?!?" respectively. The explanation for the strange turn in Alice's story will no doubt be expounded upon is a new series featuring Tom Ward that is advertised in the last few pages of this book. It was a good ride overall. But I'm done.

Wtf Alice?!!

In full disclosure, this review is of the audiobook. I listened to the whole series on audiobook as it is how I manage to make myself clean the house. The first 11 books are read by the same amazing narrator. Books 12 and 13 both have different readers. It is hard to separate how much of my disappointment in this book was the poor writing and how much was the poor narration, but this book was a let-down in both regards. It almost seemed like it was written by a different author as well. The story did not flow the same as the rest of the series. There was too little suspense and too much bodily functions. As for the narration, I cannot think of anything nice to say. As the book is set in England, the older English narrator of the first 11 books read this as it should be. The narrator for this one was young and American. For all characters except Tom, he used a bad Scottish accent. All female characters were portrayed in the same bad Scottish accent, but with a creepy falsetto. However the most annoying was his mispronunciation of the word boggart. As the boggart played a really large role in book #13, this completely ruined it. He kept saying "Bogart" (as in Humphrey). I couldn't help but picture the creature with a fedora and a cigar. It really ruined the mental imagery.
In short, if you have read the rest of the series, you will read this one. Just make sure you read rather than listen.

I loved this series!I enjoyed them while reading but now that I'm finished I realize that it was an amazing journey with such loveable characters, all imperfect in their own ways.I loved how Delaney finished the story but at the same time set such a solid base for the next saga. The ending was a bit sad,but I have high hopes for what's yet to come.

What a great end of the story. Sweet and sorrow in the same time. It broke my heart so many times, but also felt right.

farewell...

3.5-ish
This series has a special place in my heart. It's been with me since elementary school all the way to college.
The problem I had with this book, is that it seemed rushed and at times didn't really feel like the last book. Maybe because there was always a plan to have a follow up trilogy? It did hit me right in the feels toward the end, though. So sad!

The series as a whole is definitely 5 stars to me

Interesting enough ending though it seemed like a slight copout, with no concrete details. Seems to only set up spinoff. Ending was logical though, cutting up into to tiny pieces and creating new god

Great fantasy story. All the characters are well described and easy to love.

"So, lets see how well you can fight. Lets see how well you can die."

Throughout the past four years of his apprenticeship, Thomas Ward faced hardships that no boy under John Gregory's hand had before him. From facing the Bane alone with only an untrustworthy witch to be by his side to baring witness to the sacrifice of his own mam; he has laid down his life time, and time again in the war against the dark.

The final instalment of the Wardstone Chronicles placed Tom in the most dangerous situation yet: before the devil himself, without the one he loves the most by his side.

Spooks Revenge, in my opinion, dealt with both betrayal and loss to the best of Delaney's abilities. Driven mad by grief, Tom becomes irrational and a shell of his once self; following in close footsteps to his own master in that respect before him.

At the attempt to keep things spoiler free, this thrilling conclusion to the series lived up to my expectations and more! The plot twisted in a way that I am shocked at for not scrying myself. I look forward to the Starblade Chronicles, but first I need to morn the last nine years of my life and the dedication I gave this series.

At last, all I will say is this:

"I am Thomas Ward: your worst nightmare."

Disappointing ending to a pretty adventurous YA series.
