I read this for pure nostalgia reasons and oh boy, I can definitely tell why I loved this series as a kid. So many memories flooding back, so many things in the books I tried to pick for my own life - not the babysitting part though. And Claudia (or Valerie, as she was called in Finland for some reason) was my favourite back then and yep, can definitely see why I liked her so much.

Reading this as an adult, I can see there are problematic things in this you don't realize as a kid. And it's outdated and perpetuates things no one in this day and age should need to hear. But it's also pure, sweet, nostalgia-filled feel-good fun.

I'm loving this. I get relive with childhood and go gacknto simpler times. This was a series I looked forward to and begged my parents to take me to the bookstore to buy the newest book, even getting the store to pre order them for me. Ah the days before Amazon. In book two we follow Claudia. After the girls discover a man named the Phantom is on the loose they become frightened he will come to Stoneybrook. He calls the house to make sure no one is home then robs them. Of course he goes for millionaires but that doesn't stop their fears. Compounding them the girls mainly Kristy and Claudia begin to get mysterious hang up calls while on baby sitting jobs. This results in what was as a teen, terrifying and as an adult hilarious actions by the girls. From rigged burglar alarms set off by dogs, to a secret code no one can seem to remember it's all quite amusing, even to the girls themselves in the end. This book had a good Halloween vibe perfect for this time of year, there is even a Halloween dance. I have to say with each book I love it more and more nostalgia is a good thing sometimes and I look forward to the next one.

Fun as always but I don't care for the underlying premise.

In continuing my reread through The Baby-Sitters Club I bought this book and got it a little before Christmas and started it on Christmas day.

I love the fast pace read of these books because of how short they are but the book nerd in me who loves longer stories wishes each book were a bit longer.

As a child/teen Claudia was never my favorite baby-sitter but as an adult I think I can see why people liked her though I am still more of a Mary-Anne girl.

I also liked this book better than the third. Mainly because it felt a bit more natural in ways and not as forced. Probably because I was reacquainted with old friends. But even liking it better doesn't take away the fact that this book did have it's flaws.

The biggest one for me was Kristy when finding out about Alan, saying if boys like you they tease you and I just really hate that idea especially in this day and age but I can see how it probably worked for the time period this book was written.

The other flaw was how cliche and nicely the mystery wrapped up. It just seemed not that plausible, then again I'm sure most kids and teenagers don't care about what makes sense or doesn't in books.

2.5/5 stars.

The babysitters are hounded by phantom phone calls while looking after their young charges and immediately think that its the local infamous burglar known as the phantom phonecaller. Hilarity ensues as the girls get increasingly worked up during their sitting jobs, with rather inventive methods for detering burglars.

I almost forgot how dramatic Claudia can be while I was reading this. Her love of Nancy Drew leads her imagination to run riot at times. She was never one of my favourites as I couldn't relate to her love of art, but I admit that her grandmother Mimi is my favourite adult. Every time she says 'my Claudia' my heart breaks a little. Also, not loving the Janine hate. Just because she's smart the other girls think she's boring and try to avoid her. Not cool girls. Janine will be the one bringing in the cash when she grows up, you want her on your side.

The plot has a cute little mystery that is obviously not deep, or have any real purpose. But hey, it's for kids and I loved this growing up. I'm not sure on all the boy crazy stuff these days - it feels a little dated, but otherwise... yeah. Classic 198os kids literature.
