This was a difficult read. Surprisingly triggering and upsetting, but in a good way. The author perfectly encapsulated depression in such a vivid way that it hurt. I was aching, especially near the end. I was so terrified of it ending horribly and taking my heart in the process.
It ended well. I don't buy that the police would let her go if they found the suicide note- but after the panic attack I got, expecting Gilda to be put in prison and dying by her own hand in desperation, I'm glad it didn't end that way. I don't think I could have handled it.. I got so attached to her. I wish I could help her. I wish she would let others help her. I'd like to think she found a support system and got better, instead of just slumping back into the bad place she was in and shutting everyone out. I hope Eli is okay, and that if he came out as trans, that things went well and the drinking stopped. This book was heavy, aggressively sad, and it stood out. I related so much to so many little things she mentioned. It's always the little things. On a happier note, it taught me a few things I didn't know, especially about the Catholic church. Those parts were interesting. I'll remember this for quite a while

Okay I'm actually obsessed with this book. Wow.

I have anxiety and I related to Gilda a lot while reading it (though she struggles with it way more than I do, and I have a much easier time asking for help). I loved the way this was written, in genuinely every way that could be interpreted. I'm amazed by how relatable and funny this was while also being so dark and existential. I was so drawn in and cared so much about what was going to happen to everyone involved.

Honestly I have absolutely zero complaints about this book. I mean...I wish maybe we'd gotten a glimpse of Eli at the end to see what happened there? But I understand why the author may have wanted to leave some things open-ended, and I'm satisfied with what we did get to see at the end. I can't recommend this book enough.
