It was weird. It was challenging. Moments of it were beautiful. It was distressing. It was real. Moments of it were everything I have ever wanted to forget.

Emily Austin took such care when crafting her characters and narrative for this story. It's grim in many respects, a constant reminder of death and the inevitability of it. But it is also quite beautiful, a reminder that longevity is not what makes life worth it. It's not how much you achieve or what you contribute. It's about just being human in all of its grisly and magical aspects. After all, you are never the only one suffering.

I wouldn't call this a pick-me-up by any means. Yet I mark it as hopeful. I do not believe hope always has to come from a cozy comfortable narrative. Sometimes, hope comes from relating to a protagonist's struggles and watching them come out okay in the end. Not perfect. Not everything was magically fixed.  But things have improved. And sometimes that's far more than any of us ever realize we can get.

I read this from my library but I plan to own it soon. One day I will reread it when I need a reminder that I am not crazy. I am human.

Gilda and I have a lot of the same thoughts and I enjoyed seeing them in a book.

This style of writing was very fun to read considering the content bc I process and think things similar to Gilda.

going into this book, I expected a comical story about an atheist lesbian who starts working at a church by a ridiculous accident. and while those parts of the synopsis are true, I was unpleasantly surprised by the framing of anxiety disorders in the text. proceed with caution: the book may be triggering for someone who isn't prepared to dissect their mind under a microscope.
