I really liked the characters and the premise. I especially loved the weaving of Spanish into the conversations and that it is the language of magic! The only reason I cannot rate it higher is because I found the pacing off. Through the middle of the book, I found myself not as eager to pick it up. The beginning had me fully engaged and of course the ending. But the middle I struggled with a little bit.

Anyways. I think this story can actually stand alone so I'm determining if I will continue on! I originally thought it was a duology but it looks like it will at least be a trilogy.

-This book did not come with a trigger warning but boy did it need one. I personally don’t need trigger warnings but I know anyone who has had a bad relationship with their parents would probably really benefit from a warning about the emotional and physical abuse and clear manipulation from a (wannabe) parental like figure.
-I have a soft spot for sassy thieves or fox type tricksters. Finn was such a treat.
-The characters in general were easy to like. Except for the antagonist, of course. His dialogue was very realistic manipulation.
-The ending made sense but it felt too convenient and too easily solved.
-It was repetitive at times
-I liked the card game part of the book, it was an interesting piece of the world. I also liked the way the Magic was described.

I really loved this book. If you’re looking for a Hispanic magical realism this series is for you.

I read this a few months ago, and at the time I found it underwhelming. To be honest, I don't remember too much of it, so I guess that confirms my opinion? As far as YA fantasy goes, it wasn't outright bad, just predictable from a plot perspective. What I didn't expect were the descriptions of gore and how truly evil the villain ended up being. Like, the complexity of the magic system and the light world-building made me think this was for younger YA readers, until we're hit with a level of violence that's way more appropriate for an older audience. I also thought Finn's power was super cool and wanted to see it in action, and then she ended up not having access to it the entire book for "plot reasons." Oh well, I'm proud of myself for reading this backlist title, even if it didn't meet my expectations!
