In a world where you're trained and told over and over again that you have one purpose in life, that not only your entire value but the honor of your family depends on this, being discarded by her own husband over a birthmark is more than humiliating. It reassures her fears about society and affirms the sense of being a burden her family, mother included, gave her. In a moment of defiance Maud rejects the alternative that's laid out to her and disappears herself in her own fashion.

Taking refuge with two wise women in the nearby village is not a doorway to a life she had no concept of in her isolated up bringing. One she has to be pulled on through. Once there she finds an underlying ability slowly awakening. Each bit of herself she lets chip off and embrace this new way of life brings her closer to being the thing she's accused of. Ghastly! Terrifying! And yet... and yet...

"Regrettably, I am About to Cause Trouble" is a splendid addition to anyone's TBR who craves those 'cozy fantasy' vibes that is also accessible who don't do 'magic stuff' as it's as much leaning on historical structures. Fantasy lite, if you will. The quirky characters, the essence of home and found family, and the personal journey are all in tact.

All of which makes me wonder why on earth aren't more people tapped into this title? I adored this tale. Not only was it fun, but it was a refreshing take on a protagonist who isn't all out 'not like' the gentry or the family they came from. It takes a long time for Maud to adjust her way of thinking as is reasonable for someone unaware of their own privilege. Similarly to letting go of the ideas surrounding the title 'witch' that have been preached to her. There is even a slight hint of the battle of reconciling her truth while still being devote in faith.

It is the source of humor, but also has an underlying sincerity that keeps it from becoming irritating.  The author slips in enough glimpses of the spirit and soul to show the direction Maud is headed leading to a very natural progression that sometimes is turned over for sudden realizations and awakenings. Likewise the real world pressures and atmosphere of the time have real consequence on character, environment, and narrative.

As a bonus, the audiobook is narrated by McNee. I am delighted to say she is one of those authors who absolutely makes a great performer to bring her world to life. It is not common for someone to deliver both.

Cannot recommend this enough for those who are searching for something cheeky, historical, but also doesn't sacrifice depth for pleasant atmosphere.
