I am really enjoying this series. I felt like the moments of the story weren't instantly solved. For example, when Sorin was in the mountain home and did not let Scarlett in and also threw stuff in her face - I was expecting a small fight and then him to let her in but the fact that he didn't, added complexity and realism to the characters.
I have rated it a 3.75* for a few reasons:
I have rated it a 3.75* for a few reasons:
- I found their miscommunication/lack of communication tiresome in some situations - I felt a lot of the issues could have been solved by communicating and felt every issue that came up was as a result of miscommunication - which was frustrating
- I found that them arguing and sometimes then jumping into bed brought me out of the story - giving a lack of realism
- I liked the fact that Talwyn did not instantly hate her cousin - I find a lot of these books there is a power struggle for the thrones so found it refreshing that she did not hate her cousin for that reason
- The ending
although I loved the shock factors aka Talwyn's twin flame making an appearance, I hated the fact she's just left the wedding ring, done ancient, powerful blood magic (when she isn't a witch although I know Fae can do magic) and ran off AGAIN - without telling anyone her plans - Callan was annoying at some points but also felt like in some ways, his feelings were valid - again due to the lack of communication between characters
- I do love the characters in the book - I love the variation and their different personalities
- The
powerful witch being that is in the underwater jail was never heard from again - unless Sorin and co go back to her now Scarlett has run off again - Also - why did Sorin not know about this hidden secret lair?
- Also - surely Callans lack of presence would be cause for concern for those in the mortal kingdom and would have tried to find him?
Overall, I did like the story but felt some elements were a little frustrating / did not make complete sense to me. Will read the other books as the story is definitely intriguing!

That Ending!! THAT ENDING!
I did not see that coming at all.
I did not see that coming at all.
It cannot be ignored how similar this series is to TOG. It irritates me but I will put it aside for this review.
The plot of this book is actually great, the side characters are creative, and I am excited constantly to find out what happens next. I’m hooked.
My big giant glaring issue is that about 40% of this book is the same conversation on repeat “no secrets” “I am darkness” “how could you keep this from me” “he loves me” “he loves me not”.
Absolutely infuriating lack of communication for the vast majority of this book that had me very heated in moments.
Use that content for side character development or something!
Save me from the insufferable complaining!
Alas, I love the plot, so I will continue on and let you know if it’s worth reading. Also, it should be noted that I’ve read 2 books and over 1200 pages in 2 days, clearly the books are compelling.

I’m having fun, but it’s kinda hard to support plagiarism.
(The way the explanation for traveling was verbatim the explanation for winnowing made me uncomfortable)
Scarlet is so annoying and it felt good to see people calling her out for being spoiled and selfish, it would be a good opportunity to get some character development but instead we get the cringiest speech about how she is secretly a badass assassin and the focus changes to all her friends acting like stan twitter.
Honestly, Nakoa speaking his truth was the best writing in the book, made me wonder how the author could be so self aware then throw it all away in the next paragraph.
It’s interesting that the author also copied SJM in the bad decisions department, it’s A CHOICE to make the readers dislike your main male character, SJM waited for the 5th book to shit on Rhys, Melissa did it in the second, very innovative.
We had 2 whole books to know and connect with Scarlett and Sorin, but with a few lines of Talwyn telling her side of the story and 2 pov chapters she DESTROYED Sorin’s likability and made Scarlett look really bad.
Last thing, I hate when authors make the love interest lose their whole personality when they get the girl, Sorin didn’t have a lot from start and then he became a doormat for Scarlett to step on, my guy you used to be the second to the queen, you made talwyn the queen she is, you are ancient!!!! teach your wife how to be queen, make this a professor/student romance, do something!!!
