Why 4.8⭐️
Even when I agree with so many about how this book has so many similarities with the ACOTAR series and probably is not the perfect book for so many reasons. I’m enjoying this series so much, and for that I’m ok rating it like this.

At first I thought it was predictable and I knew where it was heading then it surprised me with a twist that I hadn’t predicted, I had hoped it would pick up then but unfortunately it didn’t. I just didn’t find it captivating, I was able to put it down to easily and had to make myself finish it.

This was better than the first book in the series, but not by much. Scarlett is still an absolutely infuriating character. She is supposed to be an incredibly clever, cunning, and loveable based on the words used to describe her, but most of the time she just lashes out like a spoiled child having a temper tantrum. Soren wasn't much better, enabling her to be a stubborn child and also lashing out at her in turn. Their characterization was inconsistent and annoying.
The author again was trying to play with the reader and keep us guessing with twists and turns, but what actually happened was that the revelations were disappointments in comparison to the build up. There was less giggling about keeping secrets in this one, but it was still there to an infuriating degree. The excessive banter was also incredibly irritating, as was the constant description of clothing and all of the "purring." To be honest, I had to listen to this at 1.5x - 2.0x speed for a day to make it all bearable.
If they continue to get better, I am willing to give the third book a try. Hopefully by the time we get to the fifth book, I won't roll my eyes every 5 seconds.

I am enjoying this series but I am still very frustrated with the bratty FMC STILL not understanding she’s in a world she doesn’t know. I am finding myself constantly rolling my eyes at the immature behavior.
That being said I enjoy the story more than she annoys me. Looking forward to continuing this series.

I absolutely love this series and do not understand the lackluster reviews. To each their own I guess. The action and storyline really, really picks up on all fronts in this book. Without giving away any spoilers, there are MAJOR reveals, major progress (and setbacks) between Scarlett and Sorin, Callan is still being a whiny bitch, old faces appear, group dynamics change…just a whole bunch of really cool stuff happens that sets thing up for an even more epic book 3 (I’ve already made it to the end of book 4). People love to compare this series to ACOTAR, but I’d say they are way more in the vein of Throne of Glass but they’re all their own. They aren’t trying to copy SJM or anyone else. I love this series and loved this book. I loved the growth we saw in Scarlett (even though she still does dumb shit sometimes and keeps secrets). So Ron’s patience with her and the friendships she creates with his inner court was really entertaining to see too. We also get to see and interact with more of Talwyn in this book…she definitely takes the cake in terms of most hated character for me. Sure, Callan is annoying and whiny, but Talwyn…giirrllll
Secrets and intrigue
Just when we get some answers, new questions and mysteries arise. I love it! The relationships are interesting and vexing. Scarlett both captivate and annoy me and it makes the story even better.
These books are consuming. Haven’t found a series that brave me this feeling since Blood and Ash, The Plated Prisoner and Throne of Glass. Can’t wait for the rest of the story.
