Easy 4.5 stars
Honestly I'm such an Ali Hazelwood fan that anything they write I'll read and love.
Between this and The Queen's Gambit I wish I had gotten into chess as a child. My biggest critique of this book is it's genre being young adult, for some aspects just fall more into the adult romance category, but who knows I'm neither a publisher nor author.
Its a good short read that can fill a romance void while being touching at times.

This is like a mix of coming-of-age mix with romance. Very light on the spice level compared to other Ali Hazelwood's books. You can tell she put a lot of efforts in researching about chess when writing this book

I think I like chess now?
Ali has this way of writing men who are unapologetically in love with their woman from the jump and I will eat it up every time.
The FMC hasn't figured out they're meant to be yet? That's okay, he'll wait.

Jokes aside, this book did a really nice job of focusing on Mallory's personal growth and what she needed to overcome before she was able to actually be present in a relationship.
Nolan was a little more one dimensional, but in truth the story wasn't really about him, or even about their romance. It was about Mallory.

Sabrina sucks tho.

Not my generation so I found that the main character and Sabrina to be insufferable at times in behaviour. Like all the ways she acted out against Nolan, when he’s been so nice to her. It’s also weird how the opportunity fell into her lap at the perfect moment. And she didn’t understand much of the vibes Nolan was giving.  I prefer the ones with a millennial main character. I did like the mention of chess and women winning and making a sport more women and non binary infiltrated. Why did she feel she had to take care of her younger siblings by paying for everything just for being 4 years older than Sabrina? Sabrina can work too, to make money for derby.

refreshing lighthearted book - just what I needed after a few dark/intense reads this month

No notes—say what you will about my drug dealer (Ali), but she knows how to deliver.
